Patina Maldives review: the food-first resort that surprised me

Transfer and arrival

Our day started bright and early with a 7am transfer out of OZEN Bolifushi (I could not fathom another breakfast there) to make our connecting boat transfers to Patina.

The transfer was uneventful and since Patina does not have a lounge in Malé, we waited at the boat dock outside of Terminal Two for about 45 minutes as guests from the Aeroflot flight cleared customs and picked up their luggage. We actually could have taken a later boat out of Ozen to time the transfer a bit better, but to be so fully honest, we just wanted to get out of there lol.

To my surprise, we were upgraded to a yacht transfer and it was a lovely, very smooth ride despite choppy-ish seas. Unlike the yacht transfer at Waldorf, we did not get served any champagne, but they did serve an assortment of juices and other light bites (dates, cookies, etc.), which made the approximately 65-minute transfer go by quickly.

I know that Patina does not get the best reputation (certainly I’ve also had my fair share of doubts about the property in the past, most of it related to the natural surroundings, which from pictures certainly left a lot to be desired at the time of opening in 2021), but they’ve invested a ton of money in beautifying the resort (AKA planting a crap ton of trees and narrowing the paths to allow for more shade) and I was excited to see what the property could offer.

In no time we were entering the Fari Islands marina and made our way to Patina, passing by Ritz and whatever is going on at Capella (opening date still TBD, no construction ongoing). Unfortunately, the weather was absolutely grey on our arrival, but it was undeniable that the island did look noticeably more green than last year.

The arrival ceremony was beautiful (not as much fanfare as Ozen and nobody threw rose petals at me lol), but it was very tasteful and some serenading still did take place.

Patina was operating at around 65/70% during our stay (which is still very impressive for low season), and our sunset water villa was ready on arrival despite having gotten there in the late morning.

Sunset Water Villa 218

Our incredible butler Amnee took us to our villa by buggy and it was dead beautiful. I got a quick tour of this exact villa last year (218) when we were staying at RC and I remember really liking it, but actually living in it for a few days made me really appreciate everything about it.

From a visual standpoint, the outdoor does kind of look like a spaceship and is maybe not the most beautiful (the beach villas in my opinion look better surrounded by trees despite having the same outdoor design), but the interior has got to be one of the most beautiful I’ve ever experienced. It feels very different than any other villa I have stayed in the Maldives (other than maybe RC) as it is ultra modern, but the craftsmanship and materials used throughout the villa interior and the deck are incredibly premium and feel very luxurious.

Just like at RC, the villa offers a beautiful mix of indoor/outdoor living and the windows open in full to offer an almost 270° open layout. On rainy days like the ones we had during our stay, staying inside the villa with all of the windows open made all the difference as we could still enjoy some fresh air without getting totally drenched.

My only doubt about the design of this villa is if it will get what I call the “Joali Maldives” treatment. In the sense that this design is incredibly up to date as of 2026, and I want to take all their furniture and put it inside my house…. But I am curious if in 10 years the resort will just feel a bit tacky and from a different era since it is so in tune with current trends. Time will tell! And if I have to be very picky, unfortunately a lot of the sunset water villas have partial or direct outlooks on Helengeli which does disrupt the views a lot. The water villas closest to “Capella” are the ones I’d personally be requesting if I were to come back as those have a cleaner view with a better outlook.

The strongest food program of the trip

In my opinion, the biggest strength of Patina is the F&B, and I do not have enough words to compliment the resort on their F&B offerings.

For starters, their breakfast at Portico is the best breakfast spread I have ever seen. Visually, it is a work of art. Somewhat reminiscent of Soneva, the breakfast is split up into different rooms (1 room for fruit and juices, 1 room for pastries, cold cuts and cheeses, and 1 room for Asian dishes). I could spend 3 weeks here and not get tired of this breakfast. The design of the rooms is so beautiful (they are very dimly lit with warm LED backlighting), which creates an incredible atmosphere, and the presentation of the food is next level.

We had a chance to try some of their other dining options such as Helios, Kandu and Arabesque and they were all top tier (tip: the chicken shawarma at Arabesque, despite costing $60, is absolutely amazing). We had the opportunity to partake in their special Kandu Maldivian dinner which was so special. A 7-course Maldivian fine dining chef’s table experience where we got to savor dishes from north to south of the Maldives and got to learn more about Maldivian heritage. If you have plans to come to Patina, this dinner is absolutely worth it.

I think that if there is a resort for foodies in the Maldives, this one is it. No other resort I’ve been to offers the same quality of dining as Patina.

Island, beaches and vegetation

Now on to some of the points of improvement… Beaches and vegetation are a common discussion point when talking about Patina, and while I think the vegetation looks absolutely beautiful now with tons of greenery (still not quite as good as a natural island but definitely good enough), the beaches are probably still the resort’s weakest link as they do feel “fake.” They are not ugly and the lagoon offers some really nice shades of blue when the weather is right, but the sand does feel quite spiky when you are walking from your villa to the entrance of the seabed (seafloor when swimming is decently soft).

I reckon most of the bad feedback that Patina gets is from guests who are perhaps splitting their stay with a resort like Fushi or Joali or Velaa where the sand is so perfectly soft, and here you just do not get that, so it’s a matter of research and priority. I’ve added some pics to the Google Drive just so you can get a feel for what the vegetation looks like. I am curious to see what they do to address this moving forward since other artifical islands like CB and Jumeirah and, even Ritz in some areas, have been able to offer soft sand despite the islands being artificial.

The reef

Finally: a word on the reef. I've read on so many posts that Patina does not have a reef, even on one just a few weeks ago (I think?).

There is indeed a reef and it is actually quite nice! The reef runs on the sunset side of the island and is within very close swimmable distance from the beach or any of the sunset-facing water villas. I snorkeled all the way from 218 almost to “Capella” and back and it was a very solid reef. The coral is just OK (there is some color but don’t expect much), however, with the reef being partially located on a channel, the fish soup was absolutely wonderful (especially between the two water villa jetties there seemed to be a lot of congregation of fish of different species all mixing together). The weather was absolutely garbage for our entire stay so I only got to snorkel once on our second morning, but I saw enough. So consider the fact that Patina does not have a reef to be a busted myth!

Final verdict

All in all, I was super impressed by Patina. It is an incredible property that I hope to return to very soon to properly experience with better weather and at least a little bit of sun. It does not have the best beaches or the best lagoon, but when looking at the property holistically and taking into account the villas, the beautiful breakfast, the plentiful F&B offerings, and access to RC, it offers an undeniably incredible holiday experience at somewhat more affordable rates than the competition without sacrificing any luxury. It was night and day compared to something like Ozen.
