Faafu Atoll is the quiet alternative to Ari and Baa. The same turquoise water and powder sand, but only two resorts share the entire atoll ring. That means no speedboats buzzing past your villa, no resort-hopping day-trippers, and house reefs that still feel like private aquariums. Angsana Velavaru sits on the eastern rim; its 79 villas all have beach frontage, and the first 34 In-Ocean Villas float a kilometre offshore—the original standalone water-villa collection in the Maldives. Pullman Maamutaa occupies the western curve; its 122 villas include two Aqua Villas with underwater bedrooms where you can watch reef sharks glide past while you brush your teeth. Both resorts run PADI 5-Star Gold dive centres, but the atoll’s real diving secret is the channel between them: a 30-spot playground that includes manta cleaning stations and a wreck that sits in 30 metres of water.

The resorts: Angsana Velavaru vs Pullman Maamutaa

Angsana Velavaru is the turtle island. The name means exactly that in Dhivehi, and the kids club runs daily turtle-spotting snorkels off the jetty. The resort’s 79 villas are split between beachfront and the In-Ocean collection—34 standalone water villas reached by a short dhoni ride. Every villa has a deck shower, a daybed, and direct sand access. Dining is spread across four outlets: Funa, an overwater restaurant specialising in Maldivian seafood; Kaani, the buffet hub with live cooking stations; The Sand Bar for sunset cocktails; and in-villa dining that can be set up on your deck. The PADI 5-Star Gold Dive Centre offers everything from Discover Scuba to nitrox certifications, and the marine lab runs coral-fragmentation workshops for guests who want to leave the reef healthier than they found it.

Pullman Maldives Maamutaa is the adults-focused counterpoint. Its 122 villas include two Aqua Villas with underwater bedrooms—glass walls that put you eye-level with parrotfish and batfish. The all-inclusive package covers three restaurants (international buffet, Mediterranean-Mexican fusion, and Asian street food), three bars, and a daily programme of activities from mixology classes to sunset dolphin cruises. The dive centre is PADI 5-Star Gold Palm and SSI Diamond, with a house reef that requires a short boat ride but rewards you with eagle rays and nurse sharks. On land, the spa pavilions are built for couples: double massage beds, outdoor showers, and treatments that use local ingredients like coconut oil and frangipani.

Dining: from Maldivian feasts to underwater breakfast

Angsana’s Funa restaurant is the place for a Maldivian seafood feast. The menu changes daily based on the morning’s catch, but regulars ask for the garudhiya—a fragrant fish broth served with lime, chilli, and rice. Kaani, the buffet restaurant, runs live cooking stations for pasta, wok dishes, and Maldivian curries. Pullman’s all-inclusive package includes all three restaurants: Saffron for international buffets, Azure for Mediterranean-Mexican fusion (think ceviche and wood-fired pizzas), and Spice for Asian street food. The real dining highlight, though, is the underwater breakfast in the Aqua Villas: a basket of pastries and fresh fruit lowered to your deck while you watch sergeant majors dart past the glass.

House reefs: beach vs boat

Angsana’s house reef starts ten steps from the beach. The shallow lagoon is well suited to beginner snorkellers, with turtles grazing on seagrass and blacktip reef sharks patrolling the drop-off. The resort’s marine lab runs guided snorkels twice a day, and the dive centre offers night dives where you can see octopus and moray eels hunting. Pullman’s lagoon is sandy, so reef trips are by boat. The 15-minute ride takes you to a coral garden where eagle rays glide over staghorn coral and nurse sharks nap in the caves. Both resorts offer free snorkelling gear, and the dive centres stock prescription masks for guests who need them.

Kids & families: treasure hunts vs child-free evenings

Angsana’s Turtle Kids Club is one of the best in the Maldives. The programme runs from 9 am to 5 pm, with activities like t-shirt painting, treasure hunts, and sandcastle-building competitions. The club has its own shallow pool and a shaded play area with board games and crafts. Parents can drop off children as young as four, and the resort offers babysitting for younger siblings. Pullman, by contrast, is designed for adults. There’s no kids club, and the all-inclusive package includes evening activities like mixology classes and stargazing sessions that assume a child-free audience. That said, the resort does welcome families with older children, and the dive centre offers junior open-water certifications for teens.

Signature experiences: underwater bedrooms & marine labs

Pullman’s Aqua Villas are the standout experience in Faafu Atoll. The underwater bedrooms sit 16 feet below the surface, with glass walls that give you a 180-degree view of the reef. The villas come with a private butler who can arrange everything from in-villa massages to private dhoni charters. Angsana’s marine lab is the other signature experience. The lab runs coral-fragmentation workshops where guests can help propagate new coral colonies, and the resort’s marine biologists lead weekly reef-cleaning snorkels. Both resorts also offer sunset dolphin cruises, but Angsana’s version is family-friendly, with hot chocolate and cookies for the kids, while Pullman’s serves champagne and canapés.

Transfer: seaplane in 40 minutes

Faafu Atoll is a 40- to 45-minute seaplane ride from Velana International Airport in Malé. The flight path takes you over the atoll’s turquoise lagoon and the narrow channel between Angsana and Pullman, where manta rays often surface to feed. Both resorts include seaplane transfers in their packages, and the check-in counters at the airport are side by side, so you can compare notes with guests heading to the other resort. Who I’d send here

I’d send families with children aged 4–12 to Angsana Velavaru. The kids club keeps them busy all day, the shallow house reef is safe for beginner snorkellers, and the beachfront villas mean you can keep an eye on them from your deck. For couples and divers, Pullman Maamutaa is the better pick. The underwater Aqua Villas are one of the most romantic rooms in the Maldives, and the all-inclusive package means you can order champagne at 3 am without checking the bill. I also recommend Pullman for groups of friends: the mixology classes and sunset dolphin cruises are designed for shared experiences, and the dive centre offers nitrox certifications for advanced divers.

The honest bits

Faafu Atoll is remote. That’s its biggest strength, but it also means you’re committing to a 40-minute seaplane ride each way. If you’re prone to motion sickness, pack Dramamine—the flight can be bumpy if the wind picks up. Angsana’s In-Ocean Villas are a kilometre offshore, so you’ll need to take a dhoni to reach the main island. The ride is short (five minutes), but it can feel inconvenient if you’re travelling with toddlers or heavy dive gear. Pullman’s all-inclusive package is generous, but it doesn’t cover premium wines or spa treatments—those are charged à la carte. And while the underwater Aqua Villas are striking, the glass walls can feel exposed if you’re not used to sleeping with fish swimming past your bed.
