How to Choose a Maldives Resort (Without Getting It Wrong)

Almost everyone picks their Maldives resort off photos. Photos are the one thing every island gets right — so they tell you almost nothing. After years of sending people out here, the regrets are always the same five things, and none of them show up in a brochure.

Here's how I'd actually narrow it down.

1. The transfer decides your first and last day

How you get to the island matters more than people think. A seaplane only flies in daylight and adds a scenic but pricey leg; a speedboat is cheaper and runs at night but gets bumpy in the far atolls; a domestic flight plus boat is the norm for the south.

If you land late, a seaplane resort can mean an overnight in Malé before you even arrive. Always match your flight times to the transfer before you fall in love with a villa.

2. The house reef is either the whole trip or a non-event

If snorkelling matters to you, a great house reef you can swim to from your villa is worth more than any spa. If it doesn't, don't pay the premium islands charge for one.

This is the single most over-promised thing in the Maldives. I rate every reef honestly — Excellent, Decent or Limited — because "vibrant house reef" in the marketing often means a sandy lagoon with a few fish.

3. Board basis is where the budget quietly explodes

Half board sounds reasonable until you see ¤40 for a club sandwich and realise dinner drinks aren't included. On a remote island you are a captive market.

For most couples, a good all-inclusive on the right island is cheaper and far less stressful than bed-and-breakfast plus a la carte every night. But all-inclusive plans vary wildly — some cover premium dining and excursions, some barely cover a buffet. Read the plan, not the label.

4. Pick the villa type for how you actually relax

Over-water villas are the icon, but they're hot at midday, can be a long walk from everything, and not all of them have good swimming below. Beach villas with a pool are often the better hold for families and anyone who wants the sand.

If you only book one over-water night, make it the last — you'll have settled in and you'll appreciate it more.

5. Match the vibe, not the star rating

A six-star island that's all hushed romance is a miserable week for a family with two kids — and a buzzy, big resort is the wrong honeymoon. Size, crowd and tone matter more than the number of stars.
