Maldives from Hamburg — Ultra-Luxury – Maldives Postcards
HOW LONG IS THE FLIGHT FROM HAMBURG TO THE MALDIVES?
The flight from Hamburg to Malé takes about 10–12 hours with one stop, usually in Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul. Lufthansa offers direct flights from Frankfurt to Malé three times a week in high season, cutting the journey to just over 10 hours.
WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE MALDIVES FROM GERMANY?
The best time to visit is during the dry northeast monsoon (December–April), when expect sunny skies and calm seas. However, the shoulder months (November and April) offer a good balance of great weather and lower rates. If you’re interested in swimming with manta rays, plan your trip between June and October.
DO I NEED A VISA TO VISIT THE MALDIVES?
No, German passport holders receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival. You’ll need a valid passport (with at least 6 months’ validity), a return ticket, and proof of accommodation.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPEEDBOAT AND A SEAPLANE TRANSFER?
Speedboats are used for resorts in North Malé Atoll and are available 24/7. Seaplanes are required for resorts in more remote atolls like Baa or Raa and only operate during daylight hours (06:00–16:00). Seaplane transfers are more scenic but can be affected by weather conditions.
WHICH ATOLL IS BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS FROM HAMBURG?
Worth recommending: North Malé Atoll for first-timers because it’s the most accessible—most resorts are just 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport. Baa Atoll is another great option, especially if you’re interested in marine life like manta rays and whale sharks, but it requires a 30–40-minute seaplane transfer.
CAN I VISIT MORE THAN ONE RESORT DURING MY TRIP?
Yes! If you’re staying 10 days or more, Fede recommends splitting your stay between two atolls. For example, you could start in North Malé Atoll for convenience and then head to Baa Atoll for a more remote experience. Transfers between resorts can be arranged by speedboat, seaplane, or even private yacht.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR A TRIP TO THE MALDIVES?
Pack light, breathable clothing (think linen and cotton), swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and waterproof sandals. If you’re planning to dine at a fine-dining restaurant, bring a smart-casual outfit (resorts are relaxed, but some venues have dress codes). Don’t forget a waterproof phone case for snorkelling and a good book for beach days.
IS THE MALDIVES SUITABLE FOR FAMILIES?
Absolutely. Many resorts, like Vakkaru Maldives and Soneva Jani, are designed with families in mind. They offer kids’ clubs, family villas, and activities like snorkelling, dolphin cruises, and even chocolate-making classes. The shallow lagoons are well suited to young children to splash around safely.

The Maldives is 4 hours ahead of Hamburg during Central European Summer Time (CEST) and 3 hours ahead during Central European Time (CET). For example, if it’s 12:00 in Hamburg during summer, it’s 16:00 in the Maldives.
CAN I USE EUROS OR DO I NEED MALDIVIAN RUFIYAA?
Resorts price everything in US dollars, and most accept credit cards. You won’t need Maldivian Rufiyaa unless you’re visiting a local island or market. It’s a good idea to carry some small USD bills for tips, though.

Resorts offer a mixed menu. You’ll find everything from fresh seafood and sushi to Italian pasta and Indian curries. Many resorts also have organic gardens where they grow their own herbs and vegetables. If you have dietary restrictions, let me know—I can make sure your resort is prepared.
