The Maldives works for Havelock North travellers because it’s a true escape that doesn’t feel exhausting to reach. You’re not adding hours of island-hopping once you land — just a short speedboat or seaplane ride to your resort. The time difference is only +5 hours, so jet lag is minimal. guests come for families to Anantara Dhigu in the South Male Atoll where the lagoon is shallow and calm, well suited to kids. The resort has a kids’ club and easy beach access. Couples prefer the North Male Atoll for its proximity to Male Airport; Gili Lankanfushi is just 20 minutes by speedboat. The flight from Havelock North

You’ll fly out of Auckland with a connection through Singapore or Dubai. Emirates and Singapore Airlines are the most reliable carriers. Flight time is around 19 hours total with a 3–4 hour layover. The Maldives is +5 hours from New Zealand time, so you’ll arrive in the evening local time. I always book the speedboat transfer in advance if you’re staying at a North Male Atoll resort like Gili Lankanfushi or Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi — it’s a 20–45 minute ride and you’ll be at the resort in time for dinner. Seaplane transfers take 30–45 minutes but only operate during daylight, so if you land after 3 PM, you’ll need to overnight in Male.

Best time to go

The dry season runs January through April with the least rain and calmest lagoons. That’s peak season, so rates are higher. May and October are shoulder months with good weather and better prices. The wet season from June to September has more rain but still plenty of sunshine — and the best surf conditions if you’re into that. Water temperatures stay warm year-round. Manta ray season peaks around Hanifaru Bay from May to November, so if that’s a priority, plan accordingly.

Resorts I recommend

For families, Anantara Dhigu in the South Male Atoll has spacious beach villas, a kids’ club, and easy snorkelling right off the shore. The resort is a 35-minute speedboat ride from the airport. Couples love Gili Lankanfushi in the North Male Atoll — it’s a 20-minute speedboat ride, so you’re at the resort quickly after landing. The overwater villas have private decks and the house reef is excellent. Kudadoo Maldives Private Island is another top pick; it’s a 40-minute seaplane ride but the all-inclusive luxury and solar-powered sustainability make it worth the transfer.

What to pack

Pack light — you’ll be in swimsuits and sundresses the whole time. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard for snorkelling, and a dry bag for boat trips. If you’re visiting during the wet season, a lightweight rain jacket is useful. Most resorts are barefoot-friendly, so leave the heels at home. Don’t forget your sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so pack modest clothing if you plan to visit local islands.
