Why people come here

The Maldives is closer than you think. From Bedford, it’s a single connection—usually Dubai or Dohaand you’re there in under 16 hours. The time difference is +5 hours, so you land in the afternoon and can be on a speedboat to your resort by sunset. Good for families to Baa Atoll because it’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Vakkaru Maldives has 125 villas, including beach suites with direct lagoon access, and a kids’ club that keeps children happy while parents sip cocktails by the pool. Couples often choose Kudadoo Private Island—just 15 villas, all with pools, and a house reef where turtles glide past your deck. And for food lovers, Hurawalhi’s 5.8 restaurant sits five metres underwater, so you can watch parrotfish while you eat sushi. Most resorts are reachable by speedboat or seaplane. Speedboats are cheaper and run day or night; seaplanes are scenic but only fly in daylight. If your flight lands after 4pm, you’ll spend the night in Malé or at an airport hotel—I can arrange that too.

The flight from Bedford

There are no direct flights from Bedford, but London is the main gateway. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic offer direct flights from Heathrow to Malé, taking about 11 hours. Most travellers from Bedford connect through London, but if you’re near Luton or Stansted, you can also fly to Dubai or Doha first—Emirates and Qatar Airways have daily flights. From Bedford, the quickest route is usually a train to London, then a direct flight. Total travel time: around 14 hours. If you prefer a single connection, fly from London to Dubai (7 hours), then Dubai to Malé (4.5 hours). The best time to fly is January to April, when the weather is dry and the seas are calm. But even in the wet season—May to October—you’ll get plenty of sunshine between the short rain showers. I’ve guided clients in June, and they still rave about the empty beaches and lower rates.

Which atoll suits you

North Malé Atoll is the most convenient for UK travellers. Gili Lankanfushi is just 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, making it well suited to short breaks. The resort has 45 overwater villas, each with a private deck and glass floor so you can watch the fish below. Baa Atoll is my pick for families. Vakkaru Maldives has a kids’ club, a house reef concentrated with marine life, and beach villas with pools. The atoll is also home to Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays gather in their hundreds—your children will talk about it for years. Lhaviyani Atoll is quieter. Hurawalhi Island Resort has 90 villas, including 30 with ocean pools, and a house reef so vibrant you’ll see turtles within minutes of snorkelling. The resort is a 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé, but the views are worth it—blue-green lagoons dotted with tiny sandbanks.

The honest bit

Seaplanes don’t fly after dark, so if your flight lands late, you’ll spend the first night in Malé. The Hulhulé Island Hotel is a short ferry ride from the airport and has comfortable rooms with lagoon views. Speedboats are cheaper but can be bumpy in rough seas. If you’re prone to seasickness, opt for a seaplane—you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the atolls, and the transfer is smoother. The wet season—May to October—brings occasional rain, but it’s usually short-lived. Resorts are quieter, rates are lower, and the diving is excellent. I’ve guided clients in September, and they loved the lack of crowds. Most resorts have house reefs, but not all are equal. Kudadoo’s reef is stunning—expect turtles, rays, and colourful fish just metres from your villa. Gili Lankanfushi’s reef is also excellent, with shallow areas well suited to snorkelling. If the house reef is important to you, message me, and I’ll recommend the best.

Who Fede guides where

Families: Vakkaru Maldives in Baa Atoll. The resort has 125 villas, including beach suites with direct lagoon access, and a kids’ club with activities like snorkelling and coconut-husk painting. The house reef is shallow and safe for children, and the all-inclusive dining means no surprises on the bill. Couples: Kudadoo Private Island. Just 15 villas, all with pools, and a ‘anything, anytime, anywhere’ service. The resort is fully solar-powered, so you can feel good about your footprint. The house reef is home to turtles and rays, and the spa has a salt cave for treatments. Divers: Hurawalhi Island Resort in Lhaviyani Atoll. The house reef is vibrant, and the resort is close to famous dive sites like Maamunagau Caves. The underwater restaurant, 5.8, is a must-visit—dining surrounded by fish without getting wet. Foodies: Patina Maldives in North Malé Atoll. The resort has a permanent art gallery, an artist-in-residence programme, and five restaurants, including a Japanese-Peruvian fusion spot. The Fari Islands campus means you can dine at neighbouring resorts too.

The transfer experience

Most resorts are reached by speedboat or seaplane. Speedboats are cheaper and run day or night—Gili Lankanfushi is just 20 minutes from the airport. Seaplanes are scenic but only fly in daylight, so if your flight lands after 4pm, you’ll spend the night in Malé. Seaplane transfers are memorable. You’ll board a Twin Otter aircraft, and the pilot will point out atolls as you fly. The views are striking—blue-green lagoons, tiny sandbanks, and the occasional reef shark. Trans Maldivian Airways operates most seaplane transfers, and the staff are friendly and efficient. Speedboats are faster but can be bumpy. If the sea is rough, the ride might be uncomfortable, but most resorts provide seasickness tablets. The boats are modern and comfortable, with shaded seating and bottled water. For something different, Waldorf Astoria Maldives offers a 45-minute yacht transfer. You’ll sip champagne as you cruise past uninhabited islands, arriving at the resort in style.

Best time to visit

The Maldives has two seasons: dry and wet. The dry season—January to April—brings blue skies, calm seas, and the best conditions for snorkelling and diving. It’s also the busiest time, so resorts book up quickly. The wet season—May to October—brings occasional rain, but it’s usually short-lived. Resorts are quieter, rates are lower, and the diving is excellent. Manta rays gather in Baa Atoll from June to November, and whale sharks are often spotted. November and December can be unpredictable, with occasional rain showers. But even then, the weather is warm, and the resorts are festive. If you’re flexible, the shoulder months—April and October—offer a balance of good weather and lower rates. For UK travellers, the time difference is +5 hours. If you leave Bedford at 7am, you’ll land in Malé around 4pm local time—just in time for a speedboat transfer to your resort.
