Maldives from St. Petersburg, USA — Honeymoon | Maldives Postcards
When to go
The Maldives has two seasons: dry (December–April) and wet (May–October). Dry season brings blue skies, calm seas, and the best visibility for divers. It’s also peak season, so resorts fill up and rates climb. Wet season—May through October—sounds ominous, but it’s really just a few short showers most afternoons. The upside? Fewer crowds, lower rates, and the chance to swim with manta rays in Baa Atoll. I’ve guided clients in June who returned with sunburns and empty wallets, proving you don’t need perfect weather to have a perfect trip.
How you’ll get there
Most travelers from the Tampa Bay area fly to Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul first. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines all offer daily nonstops from Miami and Tampa. From there, it’s a 4.5-hour flight to Malé. If you land in Malé before 3 p.m., you can catch the last seaplane of the day. Arrive after 3 p.m. And you’ll spend the night in Malé or at an airport hotel. Speedboats run later, so resorts within 35 minutes of the airport—like Gili Lankanfushi or Anantara Dhigu—are good choices if you’re arriving late.
Atolls that work for Gulf Coast travelers
North Malé Atoll is the easiest. Resorts here are 20–35 minutes by speedboat from Malé, so you can land at noon and be in your villa by 2 p.m. Gili Lankanfushi is a favorite for its Robinson Crusoe vibe and 20-minute transfer. Anantara Dhigu and Veli share a lagoon and offer family-friendly beach villas and adults-only overwater retreats. Baa Atoll is 30–35 minutes by seaplane. It’s famous for Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays gather from June to October. Vakkaru and Finolhu are great for families; Kudadoo is a solar-powered private island for couples who want zero neighbors. Lhaviyani Atoll is 40 minutes by seaplane. Hurawalhi’s 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is the only one in the Maldives where you can eat surrounded by fish without getting wet. The resort’s 90 villas include 30 ocean pool villas with direct lagoon access.
Resorts Fede recommends
Gili Lankanfushi: A 20-minute speedboat ride from Malé, this eco-chic resort has overwater villas shaped like traditional dhonis. Your personal butler—called Mr. Or Mrs. Friday—meets you at the jetty with a cool drink and a tour of the island. The house reef is excellent, and the resort’s ‘No News, No Shoes’ philosophy means you’ll leave your watch at home. Anantara Dhigu & Veli: These sister resorts share a lagoon in South Malé Atoll. Dhigu is family-friendly with a kids’ club and beach villas; Veli is adults-only with overwater villas and a wellness spa. Both are 35 minutes by speedboat from Malé. Vakkaru: Located in Baa Atoll, Vakkaru is a 30-minute seaplane ride from Malé. The resort has 125 beach and overwater villas, four restaurants, and a farm that supplies fresh herbs and vegetables. The lagoon is shallow and safe for kids, and the house reef is concentrated with marine life. Hurawalhi: In Lhaviyani Atoll, Hurawalhi is a 40-minute seaplane flight from Malé. The resort’s 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is a must-visit. The 90 villas include ocean pool villas with private decks over the lagoon. The house reef is excellent for snorkeling, and the resort offers an all-inclusive dine-around plan.
The honest bit
Seaplanes don’t fly at night, so if your international flight lands after 3 p.m., you’ll need to spend the night in Malé or at an airport hotel. Speedboats run later, but they’re less comfortable and can be rough in bad weather. Transfers aren’t cheap. A seaplane to Baa or Lhaviyani Atoll costs around $600–$700 per person round-trip. Speedboats are cheaper but only serve resorts within 35 minutes of Malé. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so alcohol is only served at resorts. You won’t find it in Malé or on local islands. Resorts have bars and serve cocktails, wine, and champagne.
