A good rule: who are nervous about all-inclusive resorts that Nova’s meal plan is actually worth it: the teppanyaki at Mizu is cooked in front of you, and the grill at Flames does a wagyu tomahawk that’s become a talking point among regulars. The house reef is a five-minute swim from the beach, so you can snorkel before breakfast without booking a boat. And because South Ari Atoll is the only region in the Maldives where whale sharks appear year-round, every week brings a chance to swim alongside them—no guarantees, but the odds are better here than almost anywhere else in the country.

The villas—simple, not stark

Nova’s 76 villas are split between land and overwater, all with the same neutral palette: whitewashed wood, linen drapes, and furniture custom-made on-site. The interiors feel like a boutique hotel in Lisbon rather than a Maldives cliché. Beach villas have outdoor showers tucked behind bamboo screens, while the overwater villas come with glass floors so you can watch parrotfish swim beneath your bed. Most villas have a terrace large enough for a sunrise yoga session or a bottle of champagne at sunset. The resort doesn’t publish exact square metres, but I’ve measured the walk from bed to terrace in a beach villa at about 12 paces—close enough to hear the waves, far enough to feel private.

Dining: five restaurants, one meal plan

Nova’s all-inclusive plan covers all five restaurants, so you can eat at a different one every night without checking a bill. Soul Kitchen is the main buffet, serving everything from Maldivian curries to wood-fired pizzas. Flames is the overwater grill, where the tomahawk steak is carved tableside. Mizu does teppanyaki on a floating platform — fresh tuna seared in front of you, served with wasabi and pickled ginger. Wink is the beach bar, open until midnight for cocktails and live music, and Solis is the café for espressos and avocado toast. The wine list is solid for an all-inclusive: Chilean reds, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, and a few French options by the glass. Guests expecting very large villas, highly personalized service or a dramatic design statement may prefer a more expensive resort.

The South Ari location is a real advantage for whale shark excursions and marine-life experiences, but sightings should never be sold as guaranteed. Nova is well placed for guests who want access to those experiences, but it is still wildlife, not a controlled activity.

The resort is small and relatively simple, which many guests will like. It feels easy to navigate and calm rather than busy. The trade-off is that dining and facilities are more limited than on larger islands, so guests looking for a long list of restaurants, activities and nightlife may want a broader resort.

It works well for couples, friends and first-time Maldives travellers who want beautiful water, a softer price point and access to one of the country’s better marine-life atolls. It is less suited to guests who want maximum privacy, a highly elevated service style or a resort with a large amount happening every day.

Signature experiences

Nova’s “Nova Heritage” programme takes guests to Dhangethi Island, a 10-minute dhoni ride away. The cultural village has a small museum, a local café serving hedhikaa (Maldivian short eats), and a chance to watch boat builders at work. Back at the resort, the Escapade Spa offers a “Reset Ritual” that combines a 60-minute massage with a sound-bath session — Tibetan singing bowls and ocean waves piped through hidden speakers. For divers, the resort’s house reef has a WWII-era shipwreck at 18 metres, and the dive centre runs PADI courses up to Divemaster. Non-divers can try a “discover scuba” session in the lagoon, where you’ll learn to breathe underwater in waist-deep water before heading out to the reef.

The all-inclusive plan covers house wine and beer, but premium spirits and champagne cost extra—if you’re a gin drinker, pack a bottle in your checked luggage to save. The seaplane transfer is scenic but bumpy, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, ask me about medication options. And while the house reef is good, it’s not the best in South Ari—serious divers will want to book a half-day trip to Maaya Thila or Fish Head, both about 45 minutes by boat.

Getting here

Nova is a 25-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport. The resort arranges transfers through Maldivian Seaplanes, and the cost is usually included in your package—message me to confirm. Seaplanes only fly during daylight, so if your international flight lands after sunset, you’ll spend the night in Malé and take the seaplane the next morning. The resort can book a hotel in Malé for you, or I can recommend a few boutique options near the airport. Once you land at Nova, a buggy will take you from the jetty to your villa—no more than five minutes, even for the farthest overwater villas.
