The island is unusually spacious by Maldives standards, with long beaches, broad villa spacing and a resort layout that gives guests more room to move than many smaller islands.

The villa product covers beach and over-water categories, with the strongest categories offering the scale, privacy and outdoor living space expected at this level, and even moreso than some of its competitors (my preference at OORR is always for a sunrise facing beach pool villa)

Dining and facilities are extensive, which makes Reethi Rah work well for longer stays and guests who want more than a small, quiet island. The resort has a more classic luxury feel than a newer design-led property, but the service culture and operational depth remain central to the appeal.

Why people come here

One&Only Reethi Rah is the Maldives’ original grand dame. It opened in 2006, when most resorts were still figuring out how to spell ‘luxury’. The island is one of the largest in the archipelago—109 acres, 3.7 miles of coastline, 12 beachesand the villas are among the biggest you’ll find: 135 sqm for a beach villa, 457 sqm for the Grand Residence. That space isn’t wasted. Most villas have a private veranda, outdoor shower, and butler who unpacks your suitcase before you’ve finished your welcome drink. The resort’s signature is its overwater villas. Unlike most Maldives resorts, where overwater villas line up like train carriages, Reethi Rah’s are clustered in groups of four, each facing a different direction. Privacy is very likely. The spa was the first in the Maldives to offer Watsu therapy—a water shiatsu performed in a warm mineral pooland it still draws guests who fly in just for a single treatment. The dive centre is a PADI Gold Palm Resort, and the kids’ club, KidsOnly, runs everything from pizza-making classes to snorkelling with a marine biologist. If you’re celebrating an anniversary or a big birthday, the Grand Sunset Residence sleeps ten and comes with a private chef and cinema. It's a property where you can host a family reunion without feeling like you’re sharing a resort.

The villas: space as a luxury

One & Only Reethi Rah's villas combine well-finished interior hardware with private gardens and direct beach access. The 130 villas are spread far enough apart that the property feels uncrowded even at full occupancy. The Water Villas extend over the lagoon with glass-floor sections and unobstructed views. Hardware is design-led and consistently maintained.

Dining: seven restaurants, one sandbank

Six restaurants cover the kitchen. Reef Club (Italian), Tapasake (Pan-Asian), and Botanica (the all-day relaxed venue) are the consistent picks. The half-board credit handles most venues meaningfully.

The house reef: snorkelling with turtles

Reethi Rah doesn’t have a classic house reef—most of the lagoon is sandy—but about 100 metres from the beach club, there’s a healthy patch of coral concentrated with marine life. The dive centre provides snorkelling gear and life vests, and the staff will point you to the best spots. You’ll see turtles, reef sharks, and schools of tropical fish. The resort also runs guided snorkelling excursions to nearby reefs, and the marine biologist at KidsOnly can teach kids how to identify different species. At night, stingrays and small sharks often gather near the overwater villas, visible from the deck. If you’re a serious diver, the dive centre offers PADI courses up to Divemaster level, and the instructors speak English, German, French, Italian, Russian, and Swedish. Their signature dives include Shark Dive, Turtle Dive, and Wreck Dive.

Wellness: Watsu, yoga, and a gym that rivals a city club

The One&Only Spa is a destination in itself. It was the first in the Maldives to install a Watsu pool, and the therapy—a water shiatsu with flowing movements—remains one of the resort’s most requested treatments. The spa has 14 treatment pavilions, some with ocean views, and a visiting practitioner programme that brings in experts in acupuncture, Pilates, and traditional herbal medicine. The fitness centre is the best in the Maldives: Technogym ARTIS equipment, a Queenax Super functional training zone, and an outdoor boxing area. For kids, KidsOnly (ages 4-12) has a swimming pool, playground, and activities like pizza-making and Maldivian drumming. One Tribe (ages 13-17) offers team games, watersports, and a chill-out zone. The resort also has an art studio, a library, and a boutique selling resort wear. If you want to explore beyond the island, the concierge can arrange big-game fishing, sunset cruises, or a private yacht charter. The resort’s location in North Malé Atoll means you’re close to some of the Maldives’ best dive sites, and the dive centre runs daily excursions.

The transfer: speedboat or seaplane

Reethi Rah is one of the few ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives accessible by speedboat. The transfer from Malé International Airport takes 45 minutes, and the resort’s private yacht is air-conditioned with complimentary Wi-Fi and snacks. If you prefer a seaplane, the flight takes 15 minutes. The resort can also arrange a private luxury yacht charter for groups. Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a welcome drink and taken to your villa by golf buggy. The transfer is seamless, and the staff make sure you’re settled in before they leave you to explore.

Who it suits

Fede guides honeymooners who want a resort that feels like a private island but has enough dining options to keep things interesting. Families love Reethi Rah because the kids’ clubs are among the best in the Maldives, and the Grand Residence can sleep ten, so grandparents and cousins can join. I also recommend it for milestone celebrations—anniversaries, big birthdays, or corporate retreats. The Grand Sunset Residence is well suited to groups, with its private beach, cinema, and chef. If you’re travelling with teens, One Tribe keeps them engaged with watersports and team games. And if you’re a wellness traveller, the spa’s Watsu pool and visiting practitioners make it a destination in itself. The resort’s size means you can have privacy when you want it, but there’s always something to do if you’re feeling social.

The honest bit

Reethi Rah is not a tiny, barefoot island. It is large, polished and full-service, which is part of the appeal, but guests looking for a very small, castaway-style resort may prefer somewhere more intimate.

The resort is also not a reef-first choice. The beaches and lagoon are strong, but clients travelling mainly for house-reef snorkelling should look at more marine-led islands.

The style is classic luxury rather than cutting-edge contemporary design, although the resort is undergoing a full refurb to bring itself up to 2026 standards. It still works very well for guests who value space, service and reputation, but those wanting the newest architecture or a more fashion-led resort may find fresher options elsewhere.

It is less suited to travellers whose priorities are house-reef snorkelling, small-island intimacy or a very new design language.
