Fede's honest take, up front: he has stayed here, and OZEN Reserve Bolifushi didn't win him over. It's a very niche resort — right for a particular kind of traveller, and underwhelming for plenty of others. The basics: it sits in South Malé Atoll, a 40-minute speedboat from Malé. The lagoon off the beach is sandy, so snorkelling is by boat. The one real draw, for the guests it does suit, is a generous all-inclusive plan.

Why people come here

OZEN isn’t just another all-inclusive resort—it’s one of the few in the Maldives where the plan feels generous. Most resorts limit you to one buffet restaurant and bottom-shelf spirits. Here, you get premium champagne, 15-18 year whiskeys, and a wine list spanning over 80 Old and New World labels. The breakfast at The Palms alone — cold cuts, exotic fruits, and made-to-order eggs—sets the tone for the day. Then there’s M6m, the underwater restaurant where the ocean becomes your dining room — for the guests it suits, a genuine highlight.

The Palms serves that champagne breakfast I mentioned, but it’s also open for lunch and dinner with a mix of international dishes. Then there’s the International, South Asian, and Peking restaurants—each with its own distinct menu. M6m, the underwater restaurant, is the showstopper. Six metres below the surface, you dine surrounded by fish and coral, with natural light filtering through the water. Reservations are essential, but the all-inclusive plan covers it, so you won’t face a surprise bill.

Snorkelling and marine life

The lagoon at OZEN is sandy, so reef trips are by boat. That’s not a downside—it means you get to explore multiple snorkelling spots, each with its own character. The resort offers unlimited excursions, so you can chase manta rays, turtles, or just drift over colourful coral gardens. The guides know the best sites for the season, and they’ll point out things you’d miss on your own. If you’re lucky, you might even spot reef sharks cruising the drop-offs. The equipment is top-notch, and the team will adjust your mask and fins before you even ask.

The villas: space and privacy

OZEN’s villas are designed for comfort, not just Instagram. The rooms are spacious, with separate living areas and outdoor decks. Some have private pools, and all come with the kind of amenities you’d expect from a luxury resort—plush bedding, rainfall showers, and minibars stocked with premium drinks. And anyone who’s ever been burned by a ‘resort fee’ at checkout—the all-inclusive plan is comprehensive enough that you’ll likely leave without a surprise charge. That’s a fairly narrow slice of traveller, though, which is exactly why Fede would rather you check with him first than assume it’s your kind of place.

The honest bit

Here’s Fede’s real view: he stayed, and it didn’t land for him. On paper the all-inclusive plan is generous and the underwater restaurant photographs beautifully — but in person he came away underwhelmed, and it isn’t a resort he recommends by default. A few things to know going in: it’s small (around two dozen villas), the house reef isn’t swimmable from the beach so all snorkelling is by boat, the island itself is reclaimed rather than natural, and even the generous plan still leaves some spa treatments, premium wines and excursions as paid extras. None of that is disqualifying — for the right, niche guest it can work well — but it’s why Fede won’t push it. If you’re drawn to it anyway, message him first: he’ll give you an honest read on whether it fits you, or suggest somewhere he rates more highly.

Getting here

OZEN is one of the few luxury resorts in South Male’ Atoll that’s reachable by speedboat. The transfer takes about 40 minutes from Velana International Airport, so you can be sipping a cocktail on your villa deck while other guests are still waiting for seaplane connections. The resort arranges the speedboat for you—just let Fede know your flight details, and he’ll coordinate the timing.
