Soneva Jani is the overwater-led Soneva — Chapter 1 has the original water-retreats and the slide-into-the-lagoon villas; Chapter 2 is newer, quieter, and on the seagrass side. The villas are the strongest in the country for hardware, particularly the 4-bedroom Reserves. The catch: the lagoon at Chapter 2 has substantial seagrass, which is good for marine life but not for the shimmering-water postcard. Pricing has climbed sharply; Fushi often delivers more per-dollar.

The Villas

Soneva Jani is built around its Water Retreat Villas — over-water suites with retractable ceilings over the bed, portholes in the floor showing the marine life below, water slides from the deck directly into the lagoon, and private wine cellars. The accommodation comes in one, two, three, and four-bedroom configurations, with the multi-bedroom variants among the largest over-water villas in the country in absolute square-metre terms. The Crusoe Residences offer the closest analogue to Fushi's beach-villa style, with eco-luxury hardware and private boats. Across both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the property, the design leans Scandinavian in its restraint — bright, open spaces, open-plan living, the outside invited in through fold-away windows and retractable ceilings. The villas are the property's clearest selling point.

Dining

Soneva Jani's dining lineup follows the same template as Fushi: full dine-around half-board with generous credits, multiple venues, and the unlimited chocolate, cheese, and ice-cream rooms that effectively make full board redundant. The signature over-water restaurant is the visual headline, and the casual lunch venues handle the relaxed side. The kitchen handles bespoke requests well — sandbank picnics, in-villa private dining, and astronomical dinners are bookable as separate experiences. The food is consistent with the Soneva brand standard and is one of the property's genuine strengths. The operations team has been steady for years and the consistency shows.

Soneva Jani offers a range of unique experiences that set it apart from other resorts. Guests can enjoy a movie under the stars at Cinema Paradiso, the resort's overwater silent cinema. The observatory offers a chance to gaze at the night sky through a sophisticated telescope. The honest bit

Soneva Jani is not the best choice for guests whose priority is house-reef snorkelling. The lagoon is spectacular visually, but it is not the same proposition as a reef-led island where guests step straight into dense coral and fish life.

The seagrass is also worth flagging. Soneva Jani has had visible seagrass in parts of the lagoon, which can affect the water colour and make some views look less perfectly pale-blue than guests may expect from the photos. The resort is doing a lot to address it and investing 100s of thousands of dollars in maintenance, and I have seen noticeable improvements over time, but it is still something to consider when choosing where to stay and which villa category to book.

The resort is more spread out and lagoon-led than jungle-led. Guests who want a lush, natural island atmosphere may prefer Soneva Fushi, while those who want the most dramatic over-water villa experience will usually prefer Jani.
