The transfer: seaplane only

There are no speedboats to Faafu Atoll. Every guest arrives by seaplane, a 40-minute flight from Velana International Airport in Malé. The planes are small—usually 16 seats—and the views are worth the ticket. You’ll fly over endless turquoise lagoons, uninhabited sandbanks, and the occasional reef shark cruising just below the surface. The seaplane lands on a calm stretch of water near the resorts, where a dhoni (local boat) ferries you the last few hundred metres to the jetty. Transfers are typically scheduled in the morning, so if you land in Malé after midday, you’ll overnight in the city and fly out the next morning. Angsana Velavaru: the original turtle island

Angsana Velavaru is built on an island locals call ‘Turtle Island’—and the name fits. The In-Ocean Villas are the standout: each one sits on its own platform a kilometre offshore, so you can snorkel straight from your deck into deep water. The house reef here is healthy, with turtles, moray eels, and schools of fusiliers common sights. On land, the resort’s PADI 5-Star Gold Dive Centre offers everything from beginner courses to advanced drift dives along the atoll’s outer reef. Dining is flexible: Funa restaurant hovers over the lagoon, serving Maldivian seafood, while Kaani’s buffet spreads out under thatched roofs. For families, the Kids Club runs treasure hunts, t-shirt painting, and beach games—all included in the all-inclusive packages.

Sun Siyam Iru Veli: the relaxed alternative

Sun Siyam Iru Veli feels like the cooler, more laid-back cousin to Angsana. The resort has around 120 villas, all with direct beach access, and a house reef that starts right at the waterline. Snorkelling here is easy—step off the sand and you’re in knee-deep water teeming with clownfish and parrotfish. The dive school is PADI 5-Star and SSI Diamond, so whether you’re getting your open-water certification or logging your 100th dive, the instructors will tailor the experience. On land, the Turtle Kids Club keeps children busy with daily activities, from sandcastle competitions to movie nights, so parents can enjoy a quiet dinner at one of the resort’s three restaurants. The spa pavilions are built over the water, with double massage beds so couples can relax together while listening to the waves. The house reefs: what to expect

Both resorts in Faafu Atoll have house reefs accessible straight from the beach. At Angsana Velavaru, the reef starts a short swim from the shore, with a gentle slope that drops to around 10 metres. The In-Ocean Villas have the best access—you can snorkel directly from your deck into deeper water, where reef sharks and rays are common. Sun Siyam Iru Veli’s reef is even closer: step off the sand and you’re in shallow water filled with colourful fish. The reef here is more compact but just as lively, with clownfish, butterflyfish, and the occasional octopus hiding in the coral. Both resorts offer guided snorkelling tours if you want to explore further afield, but the house reefs are so good that many guests never leave them.

Diving in Faafu Atoll

Faafu Atoll has 30 dive sites, all within a short boat ride from the resorts. The atoll’s outer reef is where the big stuff hangs out: whale sharks, manta rays, and schools of barracuda are regular sights. The dive centres at both Angsana and Sun Siyam are PADI 5-Star, so they can handle everything from first-time divers to technical courses. One of the best sites is ‘Manta Point’, a cleaning station where mantas gather to have parasites picked off by smaller fish. Visibility is usually excellent—20 to 30 metres—and the water temperature hovers around 28°C year-round, so a 3mm wetsuit is all you need. The honest bits
