The Maldives’ quietest atoll

Best resorts in Gaafu Dhaal Atoll

Back then, only a handful of resorts had opened, and the transfer felt like an expedition: a tiny domestic flight, a bumpy speedboat, and then—suddenly—an island so quiet you could hear the reef breathing. Today, Gaafu Dhaalu is still the Maldives’ best-kept secret: no crowded atolls, no jet skis, just long beaches, powerful surf, and house reefs that rival anything in Ari or Baa. The resorts here are built for travellers who want luxury without the crowds. This works for couples who’ve been to the Maldives before and want something new, families who need space and a kids club, and surfers chasing uncrowded breaks. The transfer is longer, but that’s the point—you’re trading convenience for remoteness. And if you ask me, the remoteness is the whole appeal.

Why people come here

Gaafu Dhaalu is the Maldives’ southernmost atoll, and it feels like it. The resorts here are spread across two districts—Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu—so you get the rare chance to stay on two islands in one trip. The beaches are wider, the sand softer, and the lagoons deeper than in the central atolls. A good rule: who’ve stayed in North Malé or Ari that this is what the Maldives used to feel like: no speedboats buzzing past, no construction noise, just empty ocean and a reef you can snorkel without seeing another soul. The transfer is the longest in the country—up to 70 minutes by domestic flight, then another 20 minutes by speedboat—but that’s what keeps the crowds away. If you’re flying that far, you’re serious about getting less-trafficked.

Ayada Maldives: the all-rounder

Ayada is the resort Fede guides if you want one place that does everything well. It’s Turkish-owned, so the design mixes Ottoman lamps with Maldivian overwater villas — Moroccan lanterns in a beachfront suite. The island is large (670x333 metres) with 122 villas, so there’s space to wander without feeling like you’re sharing the beach. The house reef is one of the best in the atoll: healthy coral, turtles, and even dolphins close to shore. Snorkel gear is free, and the water is so clear you’ll see fish from your villa deck.

Dining is strong—three restaurants, including a Japanese robatayaki grilland the all-inclusive packages are worth it if you plan to eat and drink a lot. The kids club is excellent (guests come for families with toddlers and teens), and the spa has a Turkish hammam, which is a rare find in the Maldives. Surfers will love the nearby breaks: Beacons is a fast right-hander for advanced riders, and Two Ways offers both left and right waves depending on the swell. The resort organizes guided trips, so you don’t need to bring your own board.

The transfer is the only downside: 70 minutes by domestic flight, then 15–20 minutes by speedboat. But the resort makes up for it with a warm arrival—fresh juice, cold towels, and a team that remembers your name. If you’re coming from Europe or the US, the extra flight is a small price for a reef this good.

Halcyon Private Isles Maldives: two islands, one resort

Halcyon Private Isles is the only resort in the Maldives that spans two atoll districts. The main island (Gaafu Alifu) has 21 beach villas and residences, each with a private pool and outdoor shower. The overwater villas sit in Gaafu Dhaalu, a short dhoni ride away, and they’re some of the largest in the country — sunrise views from your bathtub. The resort opened in late 2019, so it’s newer than Ayada, and the service reflects that: butler-style attention, a neck massage on arrival, and a welcome ceremony with Maldivian Boduberu drumming.

The house reef is vibrant, with colorful fish and good snorkelling right off the beach. But the real draw is the space: the villas are oversized, the pools are long, and the island is just three hectares, so you won’t feel crowded. The overwater villas are well-suited to couples, while the beach residences work for families or groups. The only catch? The overwater side isn’t open year-round, so check with me before booking.

NH Havodda: seclusion with a Japanese grill

NH Havodda is the smallest of the three, with 120 villas on a compact island. It’s a good pick if you want a quieter vibe—fewer families, more couples. The standout is Ember, the Japanese robatayaki grill, where chefs cook seafood and wagyu over charcoal. The spa is tucked into a garden, and the house reef is healthy, though not as famous as Ayada’s. The transfer is the quickest: 55 minutes by domestic flight, then 10 minutes by speedboat.

Fede guides honeymooners here for the privacy, or travellers who want a resort that feels intimate but still has a kids club. The villas are contemporary, with outdoor showers and direct beach access. The only downside is the size: the island is small, so the beaches aren’t as wide as Ayada’s. But if you’re here to relax, not explore, that won’t matter.

The honest bit

Gaafu Dhaalu isn’t for everyone. The transfer is long, and the domestic flights are on small planes—no first-class seats, just economy rows. If you’re prone to motion sickness, bring medication. The resorts are also larger than the ultra-luxury boutique properties in Baa or Lhaviyani, so service isn’t as personalized. Ayada’s gym is small, and Halcyon’ overwater villas aren’t always available. But these are minor trade-offs for the remoteness. The reefs are healthier, the beaches emptier, and the surf uncrowded. And because the atoll is so far south, the weather is often sunnier than in the north during the southwest monsoon.

A good rule: to think of Gaafu Dhaalu as the Maldives’ second act. If you’ve been to the central atolls and want something new, this is it. The resorts are built for travellers who value space, privacy, and a house reef you can snorkel without seeing another guest. The transfer is part of the adventure—once you’re there, you won’t want to leave.

Who Fede guides where

Ayada: Families, surfers, couples who want a mix of luxury and activity. The kids club, all-inclusive packages, and surf breaks make it the most versatile choice.

Halcyon Private Isles: Honeymooners, groups, or anyone who wants a two-island experience. The overwater villas are stunning, and the service is top-tier.

NH Havodda: Couples or solo travellers who want a quieter, more intimate stay. The Japanese grill and spa are the highlights.

How to get there

All three resorts require a domestic flight from Malé to Maavarulu (Ayada, Amari) or Kaadedhdhoo (Halcyon), followed by a speedboat transfer. The flights take 55–70 minutes, and the speedboats take 10–20 minutes. The resorts arrange everything—you’ll be met at Malé airport and escorted to the domestic terminal. The only thing to remember is that domestic flights don’t run late at night, so if your international flight lands after 3 PM, you’ll need to stay overnight in Malé. I can help arrange that too.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT GAAFU DHAALU?

The atoll is great year-round, but the best weather is November to April. The southwest monsoon (May–October) brings brief showers, but the resorts are sunnier than in the north. Surfers prefer June–September for bigger waves.

HOW LONG IS THE TRANSFER FROM MALÉ?

Around 2–2.5 hours total: 55–70 minutes by domestic flight, then 10–20 minutes by speedboat. The resorts arrange everything, including transfers between terminals.

DO THE RESORTS HAVE KIDS CLUBS?

Yes. Ayada and NH Havodda both have kids clubs. Halcyon Private Isles doesn’t, but it’s better suited for couples or groups anyway.

IS THE HOUSE REEF GOOD FOR SNORKELLING?

Ayada’s house reef is one of the best in the atoll—healthy coral, turtles, and dolphins. Halcyon’ reef is vibrant but smaller. Amari’s is good but not as famous.

CAN I SURF IN GAAFU DHAALU?

Absolutely. Ayada organizes trips to Beacons and Two Ways, two of the atoll’s best breaks. The waves are uncrowded and suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers.

ARE THE RESORTS ALL-INCLUSIVE?

Ayada offers strong all-inclusive packages (Diamond AI is recommended). Halcyon and Amari are half-board by default, but you can add drinks packages. Message me for details.

HOW BIG ARE THE VILLAS?

Ayada’s villas are spacious, with private pools and direct beach access. Halcyon’ overwater villas are some of the largest in the Maldives, with sunken bathtubs and outdoor showers.

IS GAAFU DHAALU GOOD FOR HONEYMOONERS?

Yes. Halcyon Private Isles is the most romantic, with oversized villas and butler service. Ayada is great if you want a mix of relaxation and activity.

WHAT’S THE FOOD LIKE?

Ayada has three restaurants, including a Japanese grill. Halcyon offers fine dining, and Amari’s Ember robatayaki is a standout for seafood and wagyu.

DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN SNORKEL GEAR?

No. All three resorts provide free snorkel gear. Ayada’s reef is so good you’ll want to use it daily.

WHAT’S THE BEACH LIKE?

Ayada has some of the widest, softest beaches in the Maldives—long stretches of white sand and turquoise water. Halcyon and Amari’s beaches are smaller but still beautiful.
