Why people come here

Meemu Atoll sits 130 km south of Malé, far enough to miss the day-tripper boats but close enough for a 45-minute seaplane hop. The atoll’s eastern edge is a wall that drops from 12 m to 30 m in a single kick-cycle—well suited to drift dives when the current runs. The house reef at Madifushi starts at the jetty; you can snorkel it at dawn before the dhoni leaves for the outer sites. No crowds, no queues, just the sound of your own bubbles.

The dive sites

Madifushi’s nearest reef is a 10-minute dhoni ride. The coral is healthy—staghorn and table acropora dominate the shallows, soft corals on the deeper slopes. Turtles are common; I’ve counted five in a single 45-minute dive. The atoll’s signature site is a manta cleaning station on the eastern rim. Visibility often exceeds 30 m, and the current keeps the water cool even in April. Night dives are possible on the house reef; the resort provides torches and a guide.

Snorkelling without the boat

The house reef is accessible from the beach in front of the Aqua Pool Villas. Entry is via a sandy slope; no ladder needed. Snorkelling gear is complimentary, and the resort sets up a daily guided snorkel to the nearest reef for two guests. The lagoon is shallow—3 m at high tide—so it’s safe for beginners.

Transfer: seaplane then dhoni

TransMaldivian Airways flies direct from Malé to Madifushi in 45 minutes. The resort meets guests at the jetty with a dhoni for the 5-minute ride to the island. No speedboats—dhonis are quieter, and the ride gives you your first glimpse of the house reef. Worth recommending: booking the first seaplane of the day; it lands at 8:30 am, so you can be in the water by 9:15 am.

Divers who want mantas without the crowds. Snorkellers who prefer a house reef they can reach without a boat. Couples who like the idea of a private island but don’t need a spa the size of a football pitch. Families with kids old enough to snorkel—there’s no kids club, so the focus stays on the ocean. I’d avoid Meemu if you’re after nightlife or a resort with 200 villas; this is a 24-villa island where the loudest sound is the call to prayer from the dhoni passing at dawn.

The honest bit

Meemu is remote. The seaplane schedule is limited—two flights a day, weather permitting. If you miss the last flight back to Malé, you’re spending the night. The resort has no doctor on site; the nearest decompression chamber is in Malé. Dining is buffet-only—BlueFin restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with a set menu that changes weekly. There’s no à la carte, no wine list, and no room service after 10 pm. The villas are comfortable but not palatial; the Aqua Pool Villas have 60 sq m of indoor space and a 30 sq m pool. If you’re after overwater bungalows with glass floors and butler service, this isn’t the place.

When to go

Manta season runs from November to April, when the northeast monsoon pushes plankton-rich water through the atoll. December and January are peak months—expect sunny skies and calm seas. February through April is shoulder season; the weather is still good, but the crowds thin out. May to October is the southwest monsoon—rainier, but the diving is still excellent, and the resort often offers lower rates. I’ve dived Meemu in June; the visibility was 25 m, and the water temperature was a steady 29 °C.
