Dive sites only locals know

Dive sites in Shaviyani Atoll

That isolation keeps the reefs quiet: fewer boats, fewer divers, and fish that haven’t learned to bolt at the first bubble. Today, only two resorts—JW Marriott Maldives and Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi—share the atoll, so the dive sites are split between them. A good rule: who want big pelagics without the crowds to pack a wide-angle lens and a 55-minute seaplane ticket. The sites we’ll cover below are the ones guests come for couples, solo travellers, and even a few nervous first-timers to over the last decade. Each one has a distinct personality: some are shallow coral gardens well suited to snorkellers, others drop to 30 m and demand a safety sausage. What they share is the same Shaviyani signature—clear water, healthy hard coral, and the occasional eagle ray gliding past like it owns the place.

Why people come here

Shaviyani Atoll is the Maldives’ quiet northern cousin. Only two resorts share its 50-odd dive sites, so you can surface from a 30 m wall and not see another boat. Both JW Marriott and Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi run PADI 5-star centres with nitrox, guided drift dives, and house reefs you can snorkel straight from the beach. The atoll’s position on the edge of the Maldivian plateau means currents sweep nutrients in from the deep, pulling in grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and the occasional manta between December and March. Water temps hover around 28 °C year-round, so a 3 mm shorty is usually enough. If you’ve ever felt crowded on a South Ari manta point, Shaviyani will feel like your own private aquarium.

The sites—what you’ll actually see

I’ve grouped the sites by resort so you can match them to your stay. Remember: these are live reefs, so fish counts and coral health shift with the seasons. Always ask the dive centre for a pre-dive briefing—visibility, current, and entry points can change in hours.

JW Marriott Maldives sites

Vagaru House Reef: A 12–18 m coral garden that starts 50 m off the beach. Hard corals are dense, and turtles graze on the seagrass patches. Best at slack tide; currents can pick up quickly, so novices should stick to the shallows.

Turtle Point: A gentle 8–12 m slope with a resident hawksbill colony. The resort’s marine biologist tags them, so you’ll get names and backstories on the dive briefing. Visibility is usually 25 m+, making it well-suited to underwater photography.

Shark Wall: A 20–30 m drop-off where grey reef sharks patrol the thermocline. The wall is pocked with overhangs; eagle rays often cruise the blue. Strong currents mean this is an advanced dive—expect to drift 500 m and surface on a SMB.

Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi sites

Coralarium House Reef: The resort’s namesake underwater gallery sits at 5 m, so snorkellers can swim through Jason deCaires Taylor’s sculptures while divers explore the deeper coral spurs. Turtles and batfish school around the statues.

Secret Garden: A 15–22 m maze of swim-throughs covered in soft corals. Moray eels lurk in the cracks, and schools of fusiliers dart between the bommies. The site is sheltered, so currents are usually mild—great for second dives.

Manta Point (seasonal): A cleaning station at 12–18 m that sees mantas from December to March. The resort runs early-morning snorkel trips here; divers can book a separate boat. Visibility often exceeds 30 m, but currents can be fierce—check with the dive centre the night before.

Transfer—how to get there

Both resorts use the same seaplane operator. Flights leave Malé International Airport (MLE) between 06:00 and 15:30; the ride takes 55 minutes and costs around USD 600 return per person. If you’re connecting from an international flight, plan a minimum 90-minute layover—baggage handling and customs can eat up time. I always book the earliest possible seaplane to maximise daylight for diving; the last flight back to Malé departs around 16:00, so you’ll need to overnight in Malé if your international flight leaves the same evening.

Who it suits

Couples who want big-fish action without the crowds. The atoll’s two resorts are small enough that you’ll rarely see more than one other dive boat at a site, yet they still offer full PADI centres, nitrox, and guided dives. Families with kids 8+ can snorkel the house reefs while parents take turns on the deeper sites. Photographers will love the visibility—25 m is common, 40 m isn’t rare in January. And if you’ve ever been skunked on a manta dive elsewhere, Shaviyani’s seasonal cleaning station is a reliable Plan B.

The honest bit

Seaplane schedules are rigid. Miss your flight and you’re looking at a USD 300–400 private charter or an overnight in Malé. The atoll’s remoteness also means fewer rescue facilities; both resorts have hyperbaric chambers, but evacuation to Malé takes 55 minutes. Currents at Shark Wall and Manta Point can surprise even experienced divers—always carry a safety sausage and listen to the briefing. Finally, the resorts are young (JW opened in 2019, Fairmont in 2018), so some coral is still recovering from construction. The dive centres are transparent about this; ask for a site map that shows the healthiest sections.

Gear and certifications

Both dive centres rent full sets, but A good rule: to bring their own mask, computer, and reef hooks—rental masks can fog in the humidity, and hooks are essential for drift dives. Nitrox is free for certified divers. Open Water is the minimum for most sites; Advanced is recommended for Shark Wall and Manta Point. Night dives are offered on the house reefs but aren’t a daily fixture—book ahead if you want one.

When to go

November to April is peak season: visibility 30–40 m, water temps 28–30 °C, and manta sightings almost very likely. May to October is shoulder season—expect 15–25 m visibility, occasional rain squalls, and lower rates. I’ve dived Shaviyani in July and still seen sharks and turtles; the rain usually clears by mid-morning, leaving the reefs bathed in sunlight. If you’re chasing mantas, December–March is non-negotiable.

Beyond the reef

Between dives, both resorts offer beach picnics on uninhabited sandbanks, sunset dolphin cruises, and spa treatments that use local coconut oil. Fairmont’s Coralarium is worth a snorkel even if you’re not diving—it’s the only underwater art gallery in the Maldives. JW Marriott’s treetop restaurant serves sushi at 10 m above the lagoon; Fede guides couples there for a romantic lunch after a morning dive.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO DIVE SHAVIYANI ATOLL FOR MANTA RAYS?

December to March is peak manta season. The cleaning station at Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi sees the most activity during these months, with visibility often exceeding 30 m. Outside this window, mantas are rare.

HOW DO I GET TO SHAVIYANI ATOLL FROM MALÉ?

Both resorts use seaplanes that take 55 minutes from Malé International Airport. Flights run between 06:00 and 15:30; book the earliest possible to maximise dive time. Private charters are available but cost USD 300–400 per person.

ARE THE DIVE SITES SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS?

Yes, but with caveats. Vagaru House Reef (JW Marriott) and Coralarium House Reef (Fairmont) are shallow (5–12 m) and sheltered, well-suited to Open Water divers. Shark Wall and Manta Point require Advanced certification due to strong currents and depth.

CAN I SNORKEL THE DIVE SITES?

Most house reefs are snorkel-friendly. Fairmont’s Coralarium is a 5 m underwater gallery accessible to snorkellers. Manta Point is also offered as a snorkel trip, but currents can be strong—check with the dive centre the night before.

WHAT MARINE LIFE CAN I EXPECT TO SEE?

Grey reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and schools of fusiliers are common year-round. Mantas visit the cleaning station at Fairmont from December to March. Moray eels and batfish are frequent at Secret Garden.

DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN DIVE GEAR?

Both resorts rent full sets, but Worth recommending: bringing your own mask, computer, and reef hooks. Rental masks can fog in the humidity, and hooks are essential for drift dives like Shark Wall.

HOW MANY DIVES CAN I DO IN A DAY?

Most guests do two dives per day—morning and afternoon. Night dives are offered on the house reefs but aren’t daily; book ahead if you want one. Nitrox is free for certified divers.

WHAT’S THE VISIBILITY LIKE?

Peak season (November–April) sees 30–40 m visibility. Shoulder season (May–October) averages 15–25 m, with occasional rain squalls reducing it further. Always ask the dive centre for a pre-dive briefing.

ARE THERE ANY DIVE SITES WITH STRONG CURRENTS?

Yes. Shark Wall at JW Marriott and Manta Point at Fairmont can have strong currents, especially during tidal changes. Both sites require Advanced certification, a reef hook, and a safety sausage.

CAN I DO A NIGHT DIVE IN SHAVIYANI ATOLL?

Night dives are offered on the house reefs at both resorts but aren’t a daily fixture. Book ahead to secure a spot. The dive centres provide torches and briefings on nocturnal marine life.

WHAT’S THE WATER TEMPERATURE LIKE?

Water temps hover around 28 °C year-round. A 3 mm shorty is usually sufficient, though some divers prefer a full 3 mm suit for longer dives in cooler months.

HOW DO I CONFIRM DIVE SITE CONDITIONS BEFORE MY TRIP?

Dive site conditions—visibility, currents, marine life—can shift quickly. The most reliable way to get up-to-date briefings is to message Fede on WhatsApp at +1 (561) 955-0414. He’ll connect you directly with the resort’s dive centre for live updates.

A note on accuracy. Travel facts shift — villa counts get added, restaurants reopen under new chefs, transfer schedules change with the seasons. We update this site as often as we can, but the fastest, most reliable way to confirm anything before booking is to message Fede on WhatsApp. He'll tell you what's true today, not what was true last year.
