HOW DO SPLIT STAYS WORK IN THE MALDIVES?

You can move between resorts as long as you submit a split-stay request three days before your first transfer. The Maldives government formalised this process in 2021, and most resorts now handle the logistics for you. I take care of the paperwork for guests enjoy.

ARE SPLIT STAYS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN STAYING AT ONE RESORT?

Yes, because you’ll pay for additional transfers (seaplane or speedboat) between atolls. However, the variety often justifies the cost—especially for longer trips. Message me on WhatsApp, and I’ll break down the numbers for your specific itinerary.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TRANSFER BETWEEN RESORTS?

Seaplane for long distances (e.g., Baa to North Malé), speedboat for shorter hops (e.g., North Malé to Addu). I arrange private speedboats for guests to avoid commercial flight schedules. The ride from Baa to North Malé takes about 45 minutes and can include champagne if you ask.

CAN I DO A SPLIT STAY WITH KIDS?

Absolutely. I’d pick resorts with strong kids’ clubs for the first stop (Baa Atoll has some of the best) and a lagoon villa with beach access for the second. Addu Atoll is great for families because the island has roads and local cafés, so teenagers won’t feel bored.

WHAT’S THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF NIGHTS I SHOULD SPEND AT EACH RESORT?

Four nights for the first resort (to decompress), three nights for the second (to explore), and three nights for the third (to wind down). If you’re short on time, I’d do five nights in Baa and two in North Malé. Anything less than two nights at a resort doesn’t give you enough time to settle in.

DO I NEED TO PACK AND UNPACK MULTIPLE TIMES?

Yes, but the resorts make it easy. Your luggage is transferred for you, and most split-stay guests travel light—just a carry-on for the transfers. A good rule: to pack one bag for the first stop and a smaller one for the second and third, so you’re not lugging around a giant suitcase.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY SEAPLANE IS DELAYED BETWEEN RESORTS?

Delays happen, especially during monsoon season. I build buffer time into guests book or download a movie. If the delay is long, the resort will usually offer a complimentary lunch or spa credit. Worst case, you’ll spend an extra night at your first resort, which isn’t the end of the world.

CAN I DO A SPLIT STAY BETWEEN A RESORT AND A LIVEABOARD?

Technically yes, but it’s logistically tricky. Liveaboards have fixed schedules, and resorts don’t always align with them. I’ve done it for diving clients who want three nights on a boat and four nights at a resort, but it requires careful planning. Message me on WhatsApp if this is something you’re considering.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR A SPLIT STAY?

November to April is ideal—calm seas, sunny skies, and the best conditions for seaplane transfers. May to October is the monsoon season, but I still guides clients during this time; the rain is brief, and the resorts are quieter. If you’re coming in the off-season, I’d avoid long seaplane rides and stick to resorts within the same atoll.

DO I NEED A VISA FOR A SPLIT STAY?

No. The Maldives offers a free 30-day visa on arrival for most nationalities, regardless of how many resorts you visit. Just make sure your passport is valid for six months beyond your arrival date. If you’re transiting through another country (e.g., Dubai or Colombo), check their entry requirements separately.

WHAT’S THE ONE THING MOST PEOPLE GET WRONG ABOUT SPLIT STAYS?

They assume all resorts are equally split-stay friendly. Some have minimum-night requirements, others charge transfer-out fees, and a few still make you re-check into the airport between stays. That’s why I handle every split stay personally—so you don’t have to worry about the fine print.

A note on accuracy. Travel facts shift — villa counts get added, restaurants reopen under new chefs, transfer schedules change with the seasons.
