Why people come here

Alimatha isn’t the newest resort, nor the flashiest. What it is: a reliably good, mid-sized island where the house reef starts at the shoreline and the mantas show up like clockwork. guests come for three generations of the same family—grandparents in January, parents in June, teenagers in November—because each trip delivered what they wanted: sun, sea, and service without the five-figure price tag. The resort has around two dozen villas, all beachfront, so you’re never more than thirty steps from the water. That matters when you’re trying to get a six-year-old into fins before the tide turns.

The two seasons—what the brochures won’t tell you

Most sources split the Maldives into ‘dry’ (November–April) and ‘wet’ (May–October). Alimatha’s seasons are offset by about a month. The northeast monsoon—the ‘dry’ one—actually peaks here in February and March, not December. Conversely, the southwest monsoon—the ‘wet’ one—arrives in late May and lingers until early November. That means December and January can be unsettled, while May and June often serve up sunny mornings and short afternoon showers. If you’re booking for Christmas, pack a light rain jacket; if you’re booking for June, pack reef-safe sunscreen and expect six hours of daily sunshine between brief downpours.

Manta season—when the ocean puts on a show

The house reef is a manta cleaning station. From late May to early November, the mantas gather to have parasites nibbled off by cleaner wrasse. The resort runs a daily ‘manta search’ boat that takes you to the best spot within ten minutes. Visibility is usually 20–30 metres, so you can watch the mantas glide beneath you like underwater kites. If you’re a diver, the same period brings whale sharks to nearby dive sites such as Miyaru Kandu. Book a morning excursion; the wind picks up in the afternoon and can churn the water.

Crowds and rates—how to avoid the peak premium

High season at Alimatha runs from mid-December to late March. The island is full, rates are at their peak, and you’ll share the reef with more snorkellers. Shoulder season—April and November—is my sweet spot. You get the tail end of manta season in November and the start of sunny skies in April, with rates 30–40 % lower than January. Low season—May to October—is the quietest and cheapest, but you trade some sunshine for occasional rain. A good rule: to think of it as ‘value season’: fewer crowds, more attentive service, and the same mantas for half the price.

The honest bits—what no one else will say

The beach is narrow at high tide. If you’re a sunbather who likes a wide swathe of sand, you’ll need to time your lounging around the tides. The resort has no overwater villas, so if you’re dreaming of waking up to a glass floor, this isn’t the place. Wi-Fi is reliable but not fibre-speed; if you’re planning to work remotely, the business centre is air-conditioned and quiet. Finally, the transfer is a 35-minute speedboat from Malé, which means no seaplane views but also no weight restrictions on luggage.

Who it suits

Families with kids aged 5–12. The shallow lagoon is safe for little ones, and the kids’ club runs daily activities that keep them engaged while parents snorkel. Couples who want mantas without the crowds. Fede guides them in November or June, when the resort is half-empty and the mantas are still around. Budget-conscious travellers who refuse to sacrifice quality. Alimatha’s rates in May and September are often lower than some guesthouses in Malé, yet you still get a private island and a house reef.

What I’d actually book

Fede would book a Beach Villa for a family of four in November. The villa has two bedrooms, a private terrace, and direct beach access. I’d add the half-board meal plan—breakfast and dinner—so the kids can eat early and the parents can enjoy candlelit dinners after sunset. I’d schedule the manta search for 8 a.m. every morning, and I’d pack a waterproof phone case for the inevitable manta selfies. For transfers, I’d choose the shared speedboat; it’s cheaper and the group is usually small enough to feel personal.

WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH FOR MANTA RAYS?

The best months are June and July, when mantas gather at the house reef cleaning station. Late May and early November are also good, with slightly fewer mantas but fewer crowds.

IS ALIMATHA GOOD FOR FAMILIES?

Yes. The shallow lagoon is safe for children, the kids’ club runs daily activities, and the beach villas can accommodate families of four. The resort is small enough that parents can keep an eye on kids from their terrace.

HOW LONG IS THE TRANSFER FROM MALÉ?

The transfer is a 35-minute speedboat ride. There are no seaplane transfers, which keeps costs lower and luggage restrictions minimal.

DOES ALIMATHA HAVE OVERWATER VILLAS?

No. All villas are beachfront with direct access to the sand and lagoon. If you’re set on an overwater villa, Fede recommends looking at other resorts in Vaavu Atoll—message me for options.

WHAT IS THE WIFI LIKE?

Wi-Fi is reliable but not fibre-speed. The business centre is air-conditioned and has a stronger connection if you need to work.

IS THERE A KIDS’ CLUB?

Yes. The kids’ club runs daily activities for children aged 5–12, including snorkelling lessons, crafts, and beach games.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

Cancellation policies vary by season. In low season (May–October), you can usually cancel up to 45 days before arrival with a small fee. In high season (December–March), the policy is stricter—often 60 days or more. Always confirm the exact terms when booking.

CAN I BOOK A PRIVATE MANTA SNORKEL TRIP?

Yes. The resort offers private manta search trips for small groups. These are well-suited to families or couples who want a more personalised experience. Message me for current availability and rates.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR A TRIP IN JUNE?

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothing, and a waterproof phone case. June has sunny mornings and short afternoon showers, so a compact umbrella is also useful.

IS ALIMATHA ALL-INCLUSIVE?

No. The resort offers half-board (breakfast and dinner) and full-board (all meals) meal plans. I usually recommend half-board for families and full-board for couples who want to minimise decision-making during their stay.

WHAT IS THE HOUSE REEF LIKE?

The house reef is directly accessible from the beach and is a manta cleaning station. Visibility is usually 20–30 metres, and you can snorkel right from your villa’s shoreline. The resort provides complimentary snorkelling gear.

A note on accuracy. Travel facts shift — villa counts get added, restaurants reopen under new chefs, transfer schedules change with the seasons.
