That convenience comes with trade-offs—some islands are artificial, some reefs are smaller, and you’ll hear the occasional boat engine—but for the right traveler, the trade is worth it. A good rule: who book here: you’re swapping remoteness for immediacy, and the reefs still deliver turtles, rays, and the occasional reef shark.

The house reef is healthy, and the resort offers sunset dhoni cruises and in-villa dining. The 24-hour butler service is a standout. Transfer is 15 minutes by speedboat—one of the shortest in the atoll.

Anantara Dhigu – the family favorite

One hundred and ten villas on a large island by Maldivian standards (460 by 100 meters). There’s a kids club, a dive center, and a lagoon shallow enough for children to splash safely. Guests can dine at sister resorts Anantara Veli and Naladhu, all within the same lagoon. The house reef is good for snorkeling, and the resort partners with Tropicsurf for lessons. If I had to pick one resort from this list for a couple who want intimacy, a great house reef, and no kids, Fede would book COMO Cocoa Island. The dhoni-shaped villas feel unique, the service is understated, and the reef is the best in the atoll. For families, OZEN Life Maadhoo is the easiest all-inclusive choice—kids eat free, the slides keep them entertained, and the underwater restaurant is a hit with adults. And for a splurge that feels like a destination in itself, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi’s three islands and 11 dining venues make it hard to leave.

The honest bit

South Male Atoll resorts are closer to the airport, which means more boat traffic. You’ll hear engines, especially on the side of the island facing the capital. Some islands are artificial—Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi and OZEN Reserve Bolifushi, for exampleand while they’re beautiful, they don’t have the same natural charm as a remote atoll. The house reefs are generally good, but they’re not as expansive as those in Baa or Raa Atoll. If you’re a serious diver, you’ll take boat trips to nearby sites. And if you’re arriving late, be prepared for a speedboat ride in the dark—it’s safe, but not as scenic as a daytime transfer.

Who it suits

Transfer times and what they mean

at most resorts in this post is reachable by speedboat or luxury yacht. The shortest transfer is Taj Exotica at 15 minutes; the longest is OZEN Life Maadhoo at 45 minutes. If you’re arriving late, the resort will have a speedboat waiting at the jetty—no need to book separately. The boats are comfortable, with bottled water and towels, and the ride is smooth. If you’re prone to seasickness, take a tablet before boarding. The only time I’d hesitate is during a storm, but the resorts monitor weather closely and will delay transfers if needed.

House reefs—what to expect

COMO Cocoa Island has the best house reef in the atoll—vibrant corals, turtles, and reef sharks. Anantara Dhigu and Veli have healthy reefs accessible from the beach, good for snorkeling. Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi’s reef is vibrant but smaller. OZEN Life Maadhoo and OZEN Reserve Bolifushi have decent reefs, but they’re not as expansive. Taj Exotica’s reef is good for snorkeling, but serious divers will take boat trips to nearby sites. If our research doesn’t mention the house reef, I haven’t included it—no guesswork.
