Privacy, reef, five kitchens

Which villa to book at Kandolhu Maldives

The island is tiny—you can walk it in ten minutes—but the reef starts three steps from the sand and the villas are spaced so you can go a whole afternoon without seeing another guest. That’s the kind of privacy couples ask me for, and Kandolhu delivers it without making you feel marooned. Five restaurants on an island this size might sound like overkill, yet each one feels distinct: Olive for Mediterranean, Sea Grill for open-fire seafood, Ata Roa for Peruvian-Mexican fusion. I still remember the ceviche I ate there at sunset; the lime was so fresh it could have been plucked from the tree behind the bar. If you’re deciding which villa to book, the choice comes down to one question: do you want to wake up to the ocean or to the garden? I’ll walk you through both.

Why people come here

Kandolhu is small enough that the staff learn your name by breakfast on day one, yet large enough to give you genuine choice. The island sits in North Ari Atoll, a 25-minute seaplane ride from Malé, so the reef is healthy and the manta season—May to November—is reliable. Thirty villas mean you’re never fighting for sun-loungers, and the five restaurants let you eat something different every night without leaving the island. Suits honeymooners who want nothing but each other, and foodie couples who wanted a new dish every meal; Kandolhu works for both.

Beach villas: garden or ocean?

The twelve Beach Villas are split into two rows. The Garden Beach Villas face the island’s lush interior. Their private pools are shaded by frangipani trees, so the water stays cool even at midday. A good rule: who want to sleep late that the garden side is quieter—no early-morning snorkellers splashing past your deck. The Ocean Beach Villas face the lagoon. Their pools catch the sun from dawn until the last light hits the horizon. If you book one of these, ask for villa 22 or 23; they’re the furthest apart and feel like your own private beach.

Overwater villas: sunset or sunrise?

Eighteen Overwater Villas curve around the eastern and southern sides of the island. The Sunrise Overwater Villas (1–9) are ideal if you like to snorkel at first light; the reef is literally beneath your floorboards. The Sunset Overwater Villas (10–18) are my pick for couples who want to share a bottle of wine on the deck as the light turns pink. Every overwater villa has a glass floor panel so you can watch fish while you brush your teeth.

The honest bit

Kandolhu is not a party island. There’s no kids’ club, so families tend to go elsewhere. The spa is small—just two treatment rooms—so book your massage early. And because the island is compact, sound carries; if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a villa at the far end of the jetty. The trade-off is that you can walk to dinner in flip-flops and still be back in your villa before the stars come out.

Dining: five restaurants, one island

The Market is the all-day buffet with a live pasta station and Maldivian curries. Olive does wood-fired pizzas and grilled octopus. Sea Grill is where guides clients who want lobster straight from the tank. Banzai is the teppanyaki counter—book the 7 pm slot so you can watch the chef’s knives flash At sunset. Ata Roa is the newest; the ceviche and tiradito are the best I’ve tasted in the Maldives. All five are included in the half-board rate, so you can mix and match without worrying about the bill.

House reef: snorkel from your doorstep

The house reef starts three steps from the beach. Turtles, rays, and schools of parrotfish are common. The best spot is the drop-off at the southern tip of the island; currents can be strong, so ask the dive centre for a guide if you’re not confident. The resort provides free snorkelling gear, and the water is so clear you’ll see the reef from the jetty. If you’re staying in an overwater villa, you can roll out of bed and into the ocean.

What I’d actually book

For a honeymoon, Fede would book the Sunset Overwater Villa with Pool (villa 15). It’s the furthest from the restaurant noise, has the best sunset views, and the private pool means you can swim at midnight without putting on a swimsuit. If you’re travelling with a friend or want extra space, the Two-Bedroom Beach Residence is the only villa with two full bedrooms; it’s set back from the beach but has a huge deck and a plunge pool big enough for laps. Message me on WhatsApp and I’ll check availability for your dates.

How many villas does Kandolhu have?

Kandolhu has 30 villas in total: 12 Beach Villas and 18 Overwater Villas. The Beach Villas are split between Garden and Ocean views, and the Overwater Villas are arranged for sunrise or sunset.

What’s the transfer time from Malé?

The transfer is a 25-minute seaplane ride from Velana International Airport. Seaplanes operate during daylight hours, so if your flight arrives late, you’ll stay overnight in Malé and fly out the next morning.

Is the house reef good for snorkelling?

Yes. The house reef starts three steps from the beach and is home to turtles, rays, and healthy coral. The southern drop-off is the most dramatic, but currents can be strong—ask the dive centre for a guided snorkel if you’re unsure.

Which villa has the best sunset views?

The Sunset Overwater Villas (10–18) have the best sunset views. Villa 15 is my top pick; it’s the furthest from the restaurant noise and has a private pool.

Are there any villas with two bedrooms?

Yes, the Two-Bedroom Beach Residence is the only villa with two full bedrooms. It’s set back from the beach but has a large deck and a plunge pool.

Is Kandolhu suitable for families?

Kandolhu is best for couples. There’s no kids’ club, and the island is small and quiet. Families with older children might enjoy it, but resorts with kids’ clubs are a better fit for younger kids.

What’s the best restaurant on the island?

It depends on what you’re craving. For seafood, Sea Grill; for teppanyaki, Banzai; for Peruvian-Mexican fusion, Ata Roa. Olive does great wood-fired pizzas, and The Market is the best for breakfast.

Is the spa big?

No, the spa has just two treatment rooms. Book your massage early in your stay to secure your preferred time slot.

Can I walk around the island?

Yes, the island is tiny—you can walk around it in about ten minutes. The paths are sandy, so flip-flops are fine.

What’s the best time to visit for mantas?

Manta season in North Ari Atoll runs from May to November. The reef is also great year-round, but mantas are most reliable during these months.

Is Wi-Fi reliable?

Wi-Fi is available in all villas and public areas, but it’s not as fast as you’d get in a city. If you need to work, the resort can set up a dedicated line in your villa—message me to arrange it.

Do I need to book restaurants in advance?

No, but it’s a good idea to reserve a table for Banzai (teppanyaki) and Ata Roa, as they’re the most popular. The other restaurants don’t require reservations.

A note on accuracy. Travel facts shift — villa counts get added, restaurants reopen under new chefs, transfer schedules change with the seasons.
