Honest review of Kuramathi Maldives

Kuramathi was different. It had already spent two decades growing a jungle, training Maldivian staff, and letting the house reef do the talking. Nine years later, I still guides clients here—not because it’s the flashiest, but because it’s the one resort where a family of four can eat, snorkel, and sleep without feeling like they’ve mortgaged the house. The transfer is short, the villas are simple but spacious, and the buffet serves grilled mahi-mahi that tastes like it was caught ten minutes ago. If you want a Maldives holiday that feels like a holiday instead of a performance, this is where I point you.

Why people come here

Most Maldives resorts are a 45-minute seaplane ride away. Kuramathi is a 15-minute speedboat from Male. That’s the first reason. The second is the price—message me for current rates, but it’s roughly half what you’d pay at a resort that requires a seaplane. The third is the house reef: you can wade in from the beach and see turtles, rays, and schools of parrotfish within minutes. guests come for families with kids as young as three, and they all come back with the same story: the snorkelling was better than the overwater villa.

The honest bit

Kuramathi isn’t trying to be Soneva or Cheval Blanc. The villas are clean and comfortable, but they’re not overwater palaces. The resort is spread across three beaches—Main Beach, Beach Villa area, and the quieter Lagoon side—so you’ll walk or take a buggy to dinner. The buffet is solid, not gourmet, and the à la carte restaurants (Thai, Italian, seafood) are good but not life-changing. What you get instead is space: around 350 rooms on a long, thin island, so it never feels crowded, even when it’s full.

The villas

There are garden rooms, beach villas, and a handful of overwater villas. The beach villas have outdoor showers and direct sand access, which is well suited to families. The overwater villas are newer, with glass floors and steps straight into the lagoon. I’d skip the garden rooms unless you’re on a tight budget—they’re set back from the beach and feel a bit enclosed. My pick for couples is a Beach Pool Villa on the Lagoon side; for families, a two-bedroom Beach Villa on the Main Beach.

Dining

The main buffet is at The Reef, and It's a property where you can eat grilled fish, Maldivian curries, and fresh fruit without worrying about the bill. The Coffee Shop does decent espresso and pastries, and The Beach House is a relaxed spot for burgers and salads. For something fancier, book The Sandbank (seafood) or The Wine Cellar (Italian). The all-inclusive packages cover most meals and drinks, including house wine and beer. If you want premium spirits, you’ll pay extra.

The house reef

The reef runs along the entire eastern side of the island. You can snorkel straight from the beach—no boat needed. The marine life is impressive: turtles, rays, reef sharks, and colourful fish. The resort offers free guided snorkelling tours twice a day, which is great for beginners. For divers, the on-site dive centre runs trips to nearby sites like Madivaru Corner, known for its strong currents and big fish. The reef is well-protected, and the resort has a marine biology centre that runs coral restoration projects.

What I’d actually book

For a couple: a Beach Pool Villa on the Lagoon side. It’s quieter, the snorkelling is better, and you get a private pool. For a family: a two-bedroom Beach Villa on the Main Beach. It’s close to the kids’ club, the buffet, and the beach. I’d add the all-inclusive package—it covers meals, drinks, and most activities, so you don’t have to think about money once you’re there.

Who it suits

Families with kids under 12. The kids’ club is free and well-run, with activities like treasure hunts and marine biology lessons. Couples who want a relaxed, no-fuss holiday. Divers and snorkellers who care more about the reef than the villa. Groups of friends—there are enough restaurants and bars to keep things interesting, but it’s not a party resort. I wouldn’t send honeymooners looking for overwater villas with private pools; there are better options for that.

The transfer

Kuramathi is one of the few Maldives resorts you can reach by speedboat. The transfer takes 15 minutes from Velana International Airport, and it’s included in most packages. If you’re arriving late, the resort can arrange a private speedboat for around $150 each way—still cheaper than a seaplane. The short transfer means you can land in Male at noon and be in the water by 1pm.
