Why people come here

Kuramathi is the Maldives without the seaplane. A 60-minute speedboat from Velana International Airport lands you on a 1.8 km-long island that feels like a proper atoll, not a manicured resort. The house reef starts 20 metres from the beach and drops into a channel where mantas gather from December to March. The resort itself is a mix of beach villas, garden bungalows, and overwater suites—around 300 in total—so there’s space for families, honeymooners, and solo travellers without the feeling of a crowd. A good rule: it’s the only Maldives resort where you can snorkel with mantas in the morning, bike to a local island for lunch, and still be back in time for a sunset dhoni cruise.

The two monsoons, explained

The Maldives has two seasons, and they’re named after the winds that bring them. The northeast monsoon—called Iruvai in Dhivehi—runs from December to April. This is the dry season: blue skies, low humidity, and water so clear you can see the coral from the surface. The southwest monsoon, Halhangu, arrives in May and lasts until October. It brings rain, wind, and choppy seas, but also lower rates and fewer guests. The transition months—November and April—are the shoulder seasons: warm, mostly sunny, but with the occasional shower.

When to see mantas and whale sharks

Mantas gather at Rasdhoo Atoll’s cleaning stations from December to March. The best spot is Madivaru Corner, a 15-minute dhoni ride from Kuramathi. The resort’s dive centre runs daily trips, and the visibility is usually 30 metres or more. Whale sharks are less predictable, but they’re most commonly spotted between August and November. The resort’s marine biologist keeps a log, so ask at the dive centre when you arrive. If you’re serious about mantas, book December to February—those are the peak months.

The honest bits: rain, wind, and villa orientation

Kuramathi’s beach villas are split between the east and west sides of the island. During the northeast monsoon (December–April), the east side is sheltered and sunny. During the southwest monsoon (May–October), the west side is the place to be. If you book a villa on the wrong side in the wrong season, you’ll spend your holiday watching the wind whip the waves instead of the sunset. The resort will let you switch villas if one is available, but it’s easier to get it right the first time. Also, the house reef is best at high tide—low tide exposes the coral, so snorkelling is limited to the channel.

What I’d actually book

For a couple, Fede would book a Beach Villa on the east side in January or February. That’s when the mantas are most active, the weather is perfect, and the resort is lively but not crowded. For a family, I’d choose a Family Beach Villa on the west side in April. The kids can play in the shallow lagoon, and the occasional afternoon shower won’t ruin the trip. If you’re on a budget, November is the best shoulder month—rates are lower, the weather is still good, and the mantas are starting to arrive. I won’t book anyone for May to October unless they’re divers or surfers—those months are for the hardcore, not the holidaymakers.

Transfer: speedboat vs seaplane

Kuramathi is one of the few Maldives resorts you can reach by speedboat. The transfer from Velana International Airport takes about 60 minutes and costs around $150 per person round-trip. Seaplanes are faster—30 minutes—but they’re also more expensive and only operate during daylight hours. If you’re arriving late or leaving early, the speedboat is your only option. The resort arranges transfers, so you don’t need to book separately.

Who it suits

Fede guides snorkellers and divers first. The house reef is vibrant, and the atoll’s dive sites—like Madivaru Corner and Hammerhead Point—are polished. Families come second: the kids’ club is one of the best in the Maldives, and the shallow lagoon is well suited to young swimmers. Honeymooners? Only if they’re on a budget or want a more active trip. For pure romance, Fede guides them to a private-island resort further south. Kuramathi is for travellers who want to explore, not just relax.
