Why people come here

April sits right in the middle of the northeast monsoon’s dry season — 28–30 °C, eight hours of sunshine a day, and rain showers that last about as long as it takes to refill your cocktail. The ocean is so clear you can count the parrotfish from your sunbed. More importantly, the manta rays are back in Baa Atoll, and the resorts have shaken off the New Year rush but haven’t yet filled up with summer families. That leaves you with the good of both: enough other guests to keep the energy up, but never so many that you’re fighting for a sunbed or a table at the overwater restaurant.

The honest villa breakdown

I tell couples to split their stay between a beach pool villa and an overwater one. The beach villa gives you sand between your toes at sunrise, a plunge pool you can actually swim in, and enough space to pretend you’re not on holiday with your in-laws. Overwater villas, on the other hand, are pure theatre—glass floors, direct lagoon access, and the kind of sunsets that make you forget your Instagram password.

At Baros Maldives, the Water Pool Villas curve around the jetty like pearls on a necklace. Each has a 20 sqm infinity pool that blends into the lagoon, so you can float from fresh water to salt without ever leaving your deck. Milaidhoo’s Water Pool Villas are even more private; they’re spaced so far apart you could host a silent disco and no one would complain. If you want a villa that’s basically a small house, The St. Regis’s Sunset Overwater Villa with Pool has a living room, a dressing room, and a bathtub that faces the horizon—well suited to couples who argue over who gets to pick the bath salts.

Dining: more than just raw fish

Kandolhu’s five restaurants cover every craving: Olive for Mediterranean, Sea Grill for charcoal-grilled lobster, and Ata Roa for ceviche that tastes like it was flown in from Lima. Milaidhoo’s Ba’theli by The Reef is the first ‘island-influenced’ fine-dining restaurant in the Maldives — Maldivian lobster with lemongrass and coconut, served on a floating deck under the stars. Hurawalhi’s 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is the world’s largest all-glass underwater dining room; you’ll be sharing the view with reef sharks and turtles while you sip champagne. Pro tip: book the 18:30 sitting so you can watch the reef transition from day to night.

The house reef: your private aquarium

Most resorts in April have house reefs you can snorkel straight from the beach. Baros’s reef starts about ten metres from the shore and is home to turtles, blacktip sharks, and fluorescent corals you can see on guided night snorkels. Kandolhu’s house reef is so vibrant it’s basically a Disney movie with better casting. If you’re staying in Baa Atoll, Hanifaru Bay is a short speedboat ride away; from April to October, hundreds of manta rays gather here to feed, and the resort will take you out for a snorkel you’ll remember longer than your wedding vows.

Signature experiences that actually feel special

Baros’s Piano Deck is a floating platform just offshore where you can have breakfast at sunrise or champagne at sunset. Milaidhoo offers a ‘name a star’ experience—you’ll get a certificate and a star chart so you can find your constellation on clear nights. Hurawalhi’s sandbank picnic is just the two of you, a picnic basket, and the entire Indian Ocean to yourselves. And if you’re feeling adventurous, COMO Cocoa Island’s dhoni-shaped villas come with complimentary snorkelling gear and two house reefs to explore.

Transfers: seaplane vs speedboat

Seaplanes are the scenic route—45 minutes of atolls sparkling below you like scattered sapphires. They land right at the resort jetty, so you’re sipping a welcome drink within minutes of touchdown. Speedboats are faster (20–35 minutes) and cheaper, but you’ll trade views for choppy waves. If you’re staying in Baa Atoll (Milaidhoo, Vakkaru) or Raa Atoll (Emerald Faarufushi), seaplane is the only option. For North Malé (Baros, Hurawalhi) or South Malé (Anantara Veli), speedboat is usually available.

Who I’d actually book

My pick for April couples is Milaidhoo Island. It’s small (50 villas), adults-focused, and sits in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The Water Pool Villas have private pools that overlook the lagoon, and the service is so personalised you’ll feel like you’re staying in a friend’s second home—if your friend happened to own a Maldivian island. The resort’s ‘Perfect Honeymoon’ package includes a star-naming ceremony, a three-course candlelit dinner on your villa deck, and a 20-minute speedboat ride to Hanifaru Bay for manta snorkelling. April is peak manta season, so you’re almost very likely a show.

If you want something closer to Malé for a shorter trip, Baros is a 25-minute speedboat ride away. It’s adults-only, has a house reef you can snorkel at midnight, and the Piano Deck is the most romantic dining spot in the Maldives. For couples who want to splurge, The St. Regis’s honeymoon package includes a floating breakfast, a 60-minute couple’s massage, and a sunset cruise on their luxury dhoni.

The honest bit

April is still dry season, so you’ll pay more than you would in June or September. That said, the resorts are quieter than in December or January, so you’ll get better service and more flexibility with dining and activity bookings. Seaplanes can be delayed by wind, so build in a buffer if you’re connecting to an international flight. And while the house reefs are stunning, they’re not all created equal—some resorts in sand-bottom lagoons will take you by boat to nearby reefs, so ask before you book.
