Maldives in February — Raa Atoll
Why I send people here in February
Most clients ask for May or December. I almost always talk them into February instead. The northeast monsoon is officially over by late January, so rain is rare and the ocean is a sheet of glass. Raa Atoll sits just north of Baa, so you still get the same UNESCO Biosphere Reserve marine life—mantas, whale sharks, hammerheads—without the Baa crowds. Transfers are quick: 30–50 minutes by seaplane from Malé, or a domestic flight to Ifuru Airport plus a 25-minute speedboat for some resorts. And because Raa is still relatively new, the resorts feel fresh, the service is hungry, and the house reefs haven’t been over-loved.
The resorts that actually deliver
Raa has around a dozen open resorts, but only five consistently earn my recommendation for February. I’ll list them in order of who Fede guides where.
1. Joali Being — the wellness reset
Joali Being is the Maldives’ first dedicated wellness island, opened in 2021 on Bodufushi. It’s adults-only, Wi-Fi-free outside villas, and built around four pillars: Mind, Skin, Energy, and Discovery. most guests starts with a pre-arrival consultation and an integrative wellbeing assessment. The resort then crafts a personalised journey — daily yoga on a floating pavilion, sensory-deprivation floats, and meals designed by nutritionists. February is ideal: the air is dry, the sea is warm, and the spa’s 39 treatment rooms are never overbooked.
2. Joali Maldives — art and adventure
Joali Maldives sits on Muravandhoo, a 15-minute speedboat from Joali Being. It’s the art sister: most villas is a gallery of hand-carved screens, Murano glass, and site-specific installations. The resort has 73 villas, a kids’ club called Muramas, and five restaurants. February is well suited to the “Her Kitchen” experience—you cook alongside the chef, then eat what you’ve made on a sandbank under the stars. The house reef is a five-minute swim from the beach, and the resort’s marine biologist leads sunset snorkels to spot eagle rays.
3. Alila Kothaifaru — family-friendly sophistication
Alila Kothaifaru is the only Raa resort Fede guides families without hesitation. The island is 11 hectares—big enough for kids to roamand the Play Alila kids’ club has a games room, library, and outdoor playground. Villas come in six types, all with private pools and sunrise or sunset views. The house reef is accessible from the beach, and the resort’s dive centre runs daily trips to Kottefaru Thila, a manta hotspot. February’s calm seas make it safe for kids to snorkel, and the resort’s “Alila Explorers” programme teaches them about coral restoration.
4. Emerald Faarufushi — all-inclusive elegance
Emerald Faarufushi is a 5-star Deluxe All-Inclusive resort on a 7-hectare island. It has 80 villas, a kids’ club called Dolphin Club, and a drop-off jetty right at the edge of the house reef. February is peak manta season in Raa, and the resort’s marine biologist leads daily snorkel trips to Hammerhead Point. The all-inclusive plan covers everything from wine tastings to sunset fishing, so families and couples can budget without surprises. The resort is part of Leading Hotels of the World, so service is polished but never stuffy.
5. Heritance Aarah — premium all-inclusive for foodies
Heritance Aarah is Raa’s original premium all-inclusive, opened in 2019. It has 150 villas, a curated wine list, and a Maldivian village on-site where guests can learn about local culture. February is the best time for the resort’s “Dine Around” plan—you can eat at any of the seven restaurants, including a Lebanese rooftop spot and a sand-floor seafood grill. The house reef is one of Raa’s deepest, with overhangs and caves well suited to advanced snorkelers. The resort’s “Turtle Quest” excursion is a hit with families: you snorkel alongside marine biologists to spot and identify resident turtles.
What to actually book in February
Fede would book Joali Being for couples who want a wellness retreat, Alila Kothaifaru for families, and Emerald Faarufushi for anyone who wants all-inclusive without sacrificing quality. If you’re torn, message me—I’ll ask a few questions and tell you which resort fits your February vibe.
The honest bit
Raa is remote, so transfers are non-negotiable. Seaplanes only fly during daylight, so if your international flight lands after 3 pm, you’ll overnight in Malé. Domestic flights to Ifuru Airport are an option for some resorts, but they’re less frequent in February. Wi-Fi is reliable in villas but patchy on the beach—don’t expect to stream. And while Raa’s resorts are newer, they’re not all equal: some cut corners on housekeeping or food quality. I only recommend the five I’ve listed above.
