Maldives in February for Split Stay
WHAT IS A SPLIT STAY IN THE MALDIVES?
A split stay means dividing your holiday between two resorts. The Maldives has streamlined the process You get two different experiences—like a house reef for snorkelling and a spa for relaxation—without the hassle of repacking.
HOW DO TRANSFERS WORK BETWEEN RESORTS?
The first resort books the inter-island transfer—usually a seaplane or speedboatand the second resort sends a boat to meet you. Your luggage is transferred separately, so it’s waiting in your new villa when you arrive. The whole process takes 35 minutes to two hours, depending on the distance.
IS FEBRUARY A GOOD TIME FOR A SPLIT STAY?
February is ideal. The weather is stable, the sea is calm, and seaplanes can land at dawn and dusk, giving you a full day on each island. It’s also manta season in Baa Atoll and whale shark season in South Ari, so you can chase both without losing time to travel.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO SPLIT A 10-DAY TRIP?
Fede recommends five nights at a resort with a strong house reef—like Conrad Maldives Rangali Island—for snorkelling and diving, followed by five nights at a smaller island with a spa and a quiet beach—like Jumeirah Dhevanafushi. The contrast gives you the good of both.
CAN I SPLIT MY STAY BETWEEN TWO RESORTS IN THE SAME ATOLL?
Yes. Many resorts in the same atoll are only 30–45 minutes apart by speedboat. For example, Jumeirah Dhevanafushi’s overwater village is 800 metres from the main island, connected by a dhoni that runs every 20 minutes. You can have breakfast on the main island and lunch over the water.
ARE SPLIT STAYS SUITABLE FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN?
I wouldn’t recommend it for families with toddlers—the transfer time can be too long for little ones. Families with older kids (12+) can handle it, especially if the first resort has a kids’ club and the second has a spa for the parents.
DO I NEED TO PACK TWICE FOR A SPLIT STAY?
No. Your luggage is transferred separately, so you only need to pack and unpack once. The resorts handle everything—you’ll find your bags in your new villa when you arrive.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SEAPLANE AND A SPEEDBOAT TRANSFER?
Seaplanes are faster for long distances—35 minutes between atolls—but they can’t land in choppy seas. Speedboats are more comfortable for short hops—45 minutes between nearby islands—but they’re less stable in rough water. A good rule: to book transfers for midday, when the sea is calmest.
CAN I BOOK A SPLIT STAY WITH POINTS OR LOYALTY PROGRAMS?
Some loyalty programs allow split stays, but the rules vary. For example, InterContinental’s Ambassador membership can upgrade a points stay, but it’s not very likely. If you’re using points, Fede recommends booking the first half with points and the second half with cash, or vice versa. Message Fede on WhatsApp to check the latest options.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CHOOSE TWO RESORTS FOR A SPLIT STAY?
Think about what you want from each half. If you want snorkelling and diving, pick a resort with a strong house reef. If you want a spa and a quiet beach, pick a smaller island with fewer guests. I’d also consider the transfer time—longer journeys are better for couples than families.
ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS ON SPLIT STAYS DUE TO COVID-19?
The Maldives has had a split-stay policy Guests may undergo temperature checks and random PCR tests on arrival, but these are non-intrusive and paid for by the government. The process is designed to be seamless.
