Why I send people here in January

South Ari Atoll is the only place in the Maldives where whale sharks can be seen year-round. In January the water is at its clearest—visibility often exceeds 30 metresand the sharks are concentrated along the southern reef edge, feeding on plankton that drifts in with the northeast monsoon. I’ve guided clients to Conrad Rangali, Outrigger Maafushivaru, and LUX* South Ari; each time they return with the same wide-eyed grin. The mantas, too, are predictable here. From December to March they gather at Manta Point, just ten minutes by dhoni from Conrad Rangali. January sits right in the sweet spot: warm air, calm seas, and the highest probability of seeing both species on the same day.

The honest transfer story

at most resorts in Ari Atoll is reached by seaplane. The flight from Malé takes 20–35 minutes, depending on the exact location. Seaplanes land on the water a short distance from the island, so there’s always a final five-minute boat ride. Most resorts include lounge access in Malé, but not all—LUX* South Ari, for example, does not. If your flight arrives late or departs early, you’ll be waiting in the public terminal. I always warn clients to pack a book and a portable charger; the lounges are comfortable, but the terminal is not.

Villas—small island vs large resort

Ari Atoll offers two distinct vibes. On the intimate end, Kandolhu has only 30 villas—beach and over-water—each with contemporary interiors and private decks. The island is small enough to walk in ten minutes, so you’ll never need a buggy. At the other extreme, LUX* South Ari sprawls across a 1.5 km-long island with 193 villas. It feels more like a village than a private island, complete with two pools, eight restaurants, and a kids’ club. Fede guides couples to Kandolhu; families and groups who want a lively atmosphere go to LUX*.

Dining—what’s actually worth ordering

Conrad Rangali has eleven restaurants, including Ithaa, the world’s first underwater restaurant. A good rule: to book Ithaa at least 48 hours ahead; the six-course menu changes daily, but the lobster bisque is a constant. At Outrigger Maafushivaru, the Teppanyaki grill at Umi is the standout—wagyu beef and fresh tuna seared tableside. LUX* South Ari’s Allegria does the best wood-fired pizza in the Maldives, and their breakfast buffet is one of the largest, with live egg stations, Maldivian roshi bread, and cold-pressed juices.

House reefs—who has the best

W Maldives in North Ari Atoll has one of the most accessible house reefs in the country. The drop-off starts just metres from the beach, and the marine life is prolific: black-tip reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and resident octopus. Snorkel in the morning; the eagle rays are most active before 11 am. Conrad Rangali’s house reef is equally impressive, with table corals and frequent manta sightings. LUX* South Ari, however, has no house reef at all—snorkelling is by boat excursion only. If you want to step straight from your villa into the ocean, avoid LUX* and book W or Conrad instead.

Signature January experiences

Whale shark excursions are the headline act. Conrad Rangali offers a private yacht option with a marine biologist; the presentation beforehand explains the sharks’ behaviour and the code of conduct—no touching, no flash photography, keep three metres distance. At Outrigger Maafushivaru, the whale shark tour includes a visit to a nearby sandbank for a picnic breakfast. For something quieter, Worth recommending: a sunset dhoni cruise with a Maldivian fisherman. He’ll cut fresh coconut for you, play the boduberu drum, and point out dolphins as the light turns pink. January sunsets are reliably striking—no rain to spoil the show.

Who I’d actually send here

Honeymooners: Kandolhu’s over-water villas have glass floors so you can watch fish swim beneath your bed. The resort is adults-only in spirit—no kids’ club, no evening entertainment, just candlelit dinners on the beach. Families: LUX* South Ari’s Kids’ Club PLAY takes children aged 3–12 for treasure hunts and Maldivian dance classes, while teens get their own lounge with DJ workshops. Divers: Conrad Rangali’s Ocean Dive Centre runs daily trips to Manta Point and Hammerhead Point, plus PADI courses from beginner to advanced. I won’t book a diving client anywhere else in Ari Atoll if they’re serious about big pelagics.

The honest bits—what no one tells you

Seaplane transfers are weather-dependent. January is usually stable, but if a storm rolls in, flights can be delayed by hours. Pack motion-sickness tablets; the planes are small and the ride can be bumpy. At LUX* South Ari, the over-water villas feel enclosed—high wooden walls block the ocean view from the deck. If you want that classic Maldives panorama, book a beach pavilion instead. And remember: whale sharks are wild animals. Some days you’ll see three; other days, none. I always set expectations low so the encounter feels like a gift, not a very likely.

What I’d actually book for January

My pick for January is Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru. It’s small—only 81 villas—so it never feels crowded, but large enough to offer five restaurants and a spa. The whale shark excursions are excellent, and the house reef is healthy with frequent turtle sightings. The transfer is a quick 25-minute seaplane ride, and the resort includes lounge access in Malé. I’d choose the Beach Pool Villa; it’s steps from the ocean and comes with a plunge pool that catches the morning sun. Message me on WhatsApp, and I’ll secure the villa and the whale shark tour before you even land.

WHY IS JANUARY THE BEST MONTH FOR ARI ATOLL?

January sits in the dry northeast monsoon, offering the most stable weather: low humidity, minimal rain, and calm seas. Whale sharks and mantas are concentrated in South Ari, and the water clarity is at its peak—well-suited to snorkelling and diving.

HOW LONG IS THE SEAPLANE TRANSFER FROM MALÉ?

Seaplane flights to Ari Atoll resorts take 20–35 minutes. The exact duration depends on the resort’s location within the atoll. All seaplanes land on the water near the island, followed by a short boat transfer.

WHICH RESORTS IN ARI ATOLL HAVE THE BEST HOUSE REEFS?

W Maldives and Conrad Rangali both have excellent house reefs accessible directly from the beach. W’s reef is known for eagle rays and black-tip sharks; Conrad’s for table corals and frequent manta sightings. LUX* South Ari has no house reef—snorkelling is by boat excursion only.

ARE THERE ANY RESORTS IN ARI ATOLL SUITABLE FOR FAMILIES?

Yes. LUX* South Ari has a dedicated kids’ club for ages 3–12 and a teens’ lounge with DJ workshops. Conrad Rangali and Outrigger Maafushivaru also welcome families, with activities like treasure hunts and snorkelling safaris.

WHAT IS THE WHALE SHARK EXCURSION LIKE?

Most resorts offer a guided snorkelling trip with a marine biologist. You’ll receive a briefing on whale shark behaviour and conservation guidelines—no touching, no flash photography, maintain three metres distance. Excursions typically last 3–4 hours and include a picnic on a sandbank.

DO I NEED TO BOOK DINING RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE?

At Conrad Rangali, yes—especially for Ithaa Undersea Restaurant. Worth recommending: booking 48 hours ahead. At Outrigger Maafushivaru and LUX* South Ari, walk-ins are usually fine, but Teppanyaki at Umi and wood-fired pizza at Allegria can get busy.

IS THERE A KIDS’ CLUB AT KANDOLHU?

No. Kandolhu is designed for couples seeking seclusion. There is no kids’ club, no evening entertainment, and the resort has an adults-only vibe.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH ARI ATOLL?

South Ari is famous for whale sharks and mantas; North Ari has more hammerhead dive sites and a quieter atmosphere. Most luxury resorts are in South Ari, while North Ari is home to smaller, boutique properties like Kandolhu.

CAN I SNORKEL FROM MY VILLA AT LUX* SOUTH ARI?

No. LUX* South Ari has no house reef. All snorkelling is done by boat excursion, including whale shark trips. If you want to step straight from your villa into the ocean, book W Maldives or Conrad Rangali instead.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR A JANUARY TRIP?

Light, breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard for snorkelling, motion-sickness tablets for seaplane transfers, and a dry bag for boat excursions. January evenings are warm, so no need for jackets.

HOW DO I AVOID CROWDS AT WHALE SHARK SPOTTING SITES?

Book a private yacht excursion through Conrad Rangali or Outrigger Maafushivaru. Private tours leave earlier, visit less crowded sites, and allow more time in the water. I also recommend January—fewer tourists than December or February.

ARE THERE ANY RESORTS IN ARI ATOLL WITH ALL-INCLUSIVE OPTIONS?

Yes. LUX* South Ari offers an all-inclusive plan that includes meals, selected drinks, and some excursions. Outrigger Maafushivaru has a half-board plus option, and Conrad Rangali can tailor an all-inclusive package on request. Message me for current inclusions.
