Why people come here

South Male Atoll is the only atoll where at most resorts is reachable by speedboat, 24 hours a day. That matters more than most travelers realize. Seaplane transfers only operate during daylight, so if you land after 3 p.m. or depart before 7 a.m., you’re stuck overnighting in Male. With speedboats, you can land at 11 p.m. and still be in your overwater villa by midnight. I’ve booked clients arriving on late-night flights from Europe and Asia; they’re sipping champagne on their deck while other guests are still waiting for the morning seaplane. The atoll is also compact. From the northern tip at Taj Exotica to the southern edge at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, it’s about 36 km—roughly the distance from Manhattan to the Hamptons. That means you can island-hop without backtracking through Male. The house reef is accessible directly from the villas, and the COMO Shambhala Retreat offers private yoga and spa treatments. The resort’s location in the atoll means you’re close to surf breaks and dive sites, but far enough from Male to avoid boat traffic. I’d choose the Dhoni Suite, which has a private deck with direct lagoon access. The resort’s Ufaa restaurant serves Mediterranean and Indian cuisine, and the Faru Bar offers cocktails by the infinity pool. For a private dining experience, Fede would book a sunset cruise with champagne and canapés. The transfer is a 40-minute speedboat ride from Male, so I could land at 10 p.m. and still be in my villa by 11 p.m. No seaplane delays, no overnight stays in Male. That’s a full extra day of vacation.

The honest bit

South Male Atoll isn’t perfect. Here’s what to keep in mind. The atoll is closer to Male than other atolls, so you’ll see more boat traffic. Resorts like SAii Lagoon and Hard Rock Hotel are on artificial islands, which lack the natural charm of resorts on untouched islands. The reefs, while healthy, aren’t as diverse as those in Baa or Raa Atolls. July is monsoon season, so expect short afternoon rain showers. They usually last 30–60 minutes and are followed by sunshine. The ocean is warm, but the wind can make some lagoons choppy. Not all resorts have kids clubs. If you’re traveling with children, double-check that the resort offers a program. Anantara Dhigu and Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi are the safest bets.

Transfers: speedboat vs. yacht
