If you’re at a resort like SAii Lagoon or Hard Rock Hotel, you’ll see speedboats passing by—though never close enough to disturb the peace. The islands here are a mix of natural and man-made; some, like the Waldorf Astoria’s, are entirely artificial, which means less dense vegetation but more privacy. The house reefs vary: COMO Cocoa Island and Ozen Life Maadhoo have excellent snorkeling, while others require a boat trip to reach decent coral.

And anyone who’s short on time—if you land at midnight, you can still be in your villa by 1 a.m. June is also well-suited to travelers who don’t mind the occasional shower. The rain here is warm, brief, and often followed by the clearest skies. I’d avoid this atoll if you’re looking for absolute seclusion or the most pristine coral in the Maldives—Baa Atoll is better for that.

At COMO Cocoa Island, Ufaa Restaurant serves Mediterranean and Indian dishes with an emphasis on fresh seafood. Try the Maldivian lobster curry. At Anantara Dhigu, Sea.Fire.Salt is the go-to for grilled fish and ocean views. Ozen Life Maadhoo’s underwater restaurant, M6m, is a must for a romantic dinner—order the tasting menu with wine pairings. Waldorf Astoria’s The Ledge by Dave Pynt offers modern Australian cuisine; the kingfish crudo is a standout.

Transfers: what to expect

All resorts in South Male Atoll offer speedboat transfers from Velana International Airport.
