Why people come here

October sits in the tail of the southwest monsoon. The trade winds have swung east, so the lagoons are glassy and the reefs are calm. Temperatures hover around 28 °C day and night, and the humidity is lower than in June. The occasional thunderstorm rolls in at dusk, cools the air, and clears by midnight—well suited to a nightcap on your deck. The resorts are half-empty, so the staff remember your name, your cocktail preference, and the way you like your eggs. And because October is still technically low season, the rates are 30–40 % below January peaks—enough to upgrade from a beach villa to an overwater suite with a slide.

The honest weather

The southwest monsoon officially runs May to October, peaking in June. By October, the storms are shorter and less frequent. I’ve stayed at Cheval Blanc Randheli in October; the sky was overcast for an hour one afternoon, then the sun returned and the reef came alive with turtles and parrotfish. The northern atolls—home to most luxury resorts—see less rain than the southern atolls. If you’re at a resort in Baa Atoll, like Soneva Fushi, you’ll have more sunshine and calmer seas than someone in Laamu Atoll.

Manta rays and whale sharks

From May to November, manta rays and whale sharks gather on the eastern edges of the atolls. In October, the water is warm and visibility is at its best. I’ve snorkelled at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll in October and counted over fifty mantas feeding in a single hour. The resort’s marine biologist will take you out at dawn or dusk, when the rays are most active. Whale sharks are also common in Baa Atoll from May to November. They’re juveniles, three to six metres long, and they’re curious—often swimming right up to snorkelers. Our research confirms that October is still within the season, and the eastern atolls are the place to be.

Who Fede guides

Honeymooners: The resorts are quiet, the overwater villas are available, and the sunsets are uninterrupted. Fede would book a villa with a glass floor at Soneva Jani so you can watch the bioluminescent plankton glow beneath you at night. Families: October is outside school holidays in most countries, so the kids’ clubs are empty and the staff have time to teach your children to snorkel. Four Seasons Kuda Huraa has a manta-ray discovery programme for kids aged 5–12. Divers: The water is warm, visibility is 30 m, and the currents are gentle. Fede guides serious divers to Baa Atoll for the mantas and whale sharks, and to Ari Atoll for the hammerheads.

The honest bit

October is a transition month, so the weather can be unpredictable. Our research warns that November and December—often labelled dry season—have been unsettled in recent years. October is more reliable, but pack a light rain jacket just in case. Seaplanes only fly during daylight, so if your international flight arrives after 3:30 pm, you’ll need to stay overnight in Malé. I always book a room at the Hulhulé Island Hotel so clients can watch the seaplanes take off at dawn. Some resorts are still recovering from the 2016 coral bleaching event. The house reef at Anantara Kihavah is being restored with coral nurseries, and guests can help transplant fragments. If a pristine house reef is non-negotiable, message me and I’ll recommend a resort with a healthy reef.

What I’d actually book

Fede would book Soneva Fushi in Baa Atoll. It’s a 30-minute seaplane ride from Malé, and the resort has its own marine biology team. In October, the water is warm, the mantas are feeding, and the villas are spacious—some have slides into the lagoon. The resort is plastic-free, and the food is organic and locally sourced. The rates are lower than in January, and the staff are attentive without being intrusive. If you prefer a resort closer to Malé, Fede would book Four Seasons Kuda Huraa. It’s a 20-minute speedboat ride, so you can arrive late and still make it to your villa for sunset. The kids’ club is excellent, and the house reef is healthy and accessible from the beach.

Transfers made simple

Most resorts are within a one-hour transfer from Malé International Airport. Seaplanes fly from 7 am to 4:30 pm, so plan your international flight to arrive by 3 pm. If you arrive later, I’ll arrange an overnight stay at the Hulhulé Island Hotel and a dawn seaplane transfer. Speedboats are faster and cheaper, but they’re weather-dependent. In October, the seas are usually calm, but if there’s a storm, the speedboat may be delayed. Seaplanes are more reliable and offer open ocean views of the atolls.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE IN THE MALDIVES IN OCTOBER?

WHAT’S THE BEST RESORT FOR A HONEYMOON IN OCTOBER?

Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll is my top pick. The overwater villas have glass floors, slides into the lagoon, and private pools. The resort is quiet in October, and the sunsets are striking.

A note on accuracy. Travel facts shift — villa counts get added, restaurants reopen under new chefs, transfer schedules change with the seasons.
