Why people come here

Most family-friendly resorts in the Maldives feel like an afterthought—kids’ menus that taste like airplane food, babysitting services that cost extra, and villas so small you’re tripping over Lego by day two. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli does the opposite. It starts with the villas: the two-bedroom Beach Suite with Pool (what I usually book for families) is 270 square metres of high-ceilinged, mahogany-lined space with a 67-square-metre private pool, two full bathrooms, and a living room big enough for a family movie night. Parents get their own wing with a king bed and ocean views; kids get a separate bedroom with twin beds and a sliding door so everyone can sleep on their own schedule. The villa even comes with a pantry kitchen where the butler can whip up midnight snacks or baby food without disturbing the main resort kitchen.

The kids club that doesn’t feel like a kids club

The Little Treasures Kids Club is housed in a low-slung, open-air pavilion surrounded by jungle. It’s not a fluorescent-lit playroom; it’s a miniature resort where children aged 4–12 can do everything the adults do—just scaled down. There’s a shallow kids’ pool with tiny sun loungers that mirror the ones by the main pool, a pirate ship complete with a crow’s nest, and a ‘Junior Chef’ kitchen where they learn to make Maldivian roshi flatbread or chocolate lava cakes. The staff are trained to treat children like small VIPs: they greet each child by name, remember their favourite snacks, and even let them ‘check in’ with their own mock passport. Parents get a WhatsApp update with photos every few hours, so you can relax at the spa or the bar without wondering if your six-year-old is finger-painting with squid ink.

Butlers who speak ‘kid’

Every St. Regis villa comes with a butler, and the ones at Vommuli are fluent in the language of children. butlers build sandcastles at dawn so the kids wake up to a ready-made fort, organise impromptu coconut-husk boat races, and even teach basic Dhivehi phrases—‘Ma-aaf kurey’ (excuse me) and ‘Shukuriyaa’ (thank you) are now part of guests’ kids’ vocabularies. The butlers also handle the logistics parents dread: they’ll pre-stock the villa fridge with organic milk and gluten-free snacks, set up baby monitors in the living room so you can hear the kids while you’re on the deck, and arrange private movie nights complete with popcorn and fairy lights. It's a property that makes you feel like you’ve hired a team of Mary Poppins clones.

Dining: no sad chicken nuggets here

The resort has six restaurants, and every one of them welcomes children with the same enthusiasm they reserve for adults. ALBA, the all-day dining spot, offers a ‘Little Gourmets’ menu that includes truffle-infused mac and cheese, sushi rolls shaped like dolphins, and a dessert station where kids can decorate their own cupcakes. Deco, the Italian restaurant, has high chairs and crayons at every table, and the sommelier will happily pair a mocktail with your child’s pasta. For parents who want a date night, the resort offers complimentary babysitting for up to four hours, and the kids’ club stays open until 10 p.m. so you can enjoy a candlelit dinner at the overwater restaurant without rushing back.

The house reef: snorkelling for small humans

The house reef at Vommuli is directly accessible from the beach, and it’s one of the few in the Maldives where you can wade in knee-deep and still see clownfish, parrotfish, and the occasional turtle. The resort provides child-sized snorkel gear and life vests, and the marine biologist runs daily ‘Reef Rangers’ sessions where kids learn to identify coral species and even help plant new coral fragments. For older children (8+), there’s a PADI Bubblemaker program that lets them try scuba diving in the shallow lagoon. I’ve had clients tell me their kids now know more about marine conservation than their science teachers back home.

What I’d actually book

If you’re travelling with two adults and two children under 12, Fede would book the two-bedroom Beach Suite with Pool. It’s the only two-bedroom option that’s all on one level (no stairs for toddlers to tumble down), and it’s positioned on the quieter east side of the island where the beach is widest and the sunrise views are best. The villa comes with a 67-square-metre pool, a swing daybed, and direct beach access—no need to walk through public areas in swimsuits. For families with teenagers or three children, the three-bedroom Overwater Villa is the next step up; it has a glass floor in the living room so the kids can watch fish swim beneath them while they’re playing video games.

The honest bit

No resort is perfect, and Vommuli has a few quirks worth mentioning. The seaplane transfer is 45 minutes, which can be tough on toddlers who hate car seats, let alone airplane seats. The resort doesn’t have a dedicated teen lounge—older kids tend to hang out at the main pool or the game room in the kids’ club. And while the house reef is vibrant, it’s not the best in the Maldives for advanced divers; if you’re a serious diving family, you’ll want to book a day trip to a nearby atoll. Finally, the resort is on the larger side (77 villas), so it doesn’t have the intimate, boutique feel of some smaller islands. But if you’re okay trading a little seclusion for polished service and facilities, these are minor trade-offs.

Who Fede guides (and who I wouldn’t)

Fede guides families with children aged 4–16 who want luxury without the ‘no kids allowed’ vibe. It’s also great for multi-generational trips—grandparents can relax at the spa while parents take the kids to the marine lab. I wouldn’t recommend it for families with infants under 18 months; the villas are spacious but not baby-proofed (no socket covers, sharp-edged furniture), and the kids’ club starts at age 4. If you’re looking for a resort where kids are an afterthought, Vommuli isn’t it. But if you want a place where your children are treated like royalty and you still get to enjoy a cocktail by the pool without hearing ‘I’m bored’ every five minutes, this is the island I’d choose.

WHAT AGES DOES THE KIDS CLUB CATER TO?

The Little Treasures Kids Club is designed for children aged 4 to 12. For teens, the resort offers a game room and poolside activities, but there’s no dedicated teen lounge.

ARE THERE FAMILY-SIZED VILLAS?

Yes. The two-bedroom Beach Suite with Pool (270 sqm) and the three-bedroom Overwater Villa (450 sqm) are both well-suited to families. Both have separate sleeping areas for parents and children.

IS THERE A DOCTOR ON-SITE?

Yes, the resort has a 24-hour medical centre with a doctor and nurse. Basic medications and first aid are available, and the resort can arrange emergency evacuations if needed.

CAN WE BRING OUR OWN BABY GEAR?

Absolutely. The resort can provide cribs, high chairs, and baby monitors, but you’re welcome to bring your own stroller, car seat, or favourite blanket. The butler will set everything up before you arrive.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT WITH KIDS?

November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and sunny skies—well-suited to snorkelling and beach days. May to October is quieter and often cheaper, with brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt plans.

ARE THERE ANY ACTIVITIES FOR TEENS?

Teens can join the PADI Bubblemaker scuba program, take surf lessons, play beach volleyball, or hang out at the game room in the kids’ club. The resort also offers jet ski tours and sunset dolphin cruises.

DOES THE RESORT OFFER CHILD-FRIENDLY DINING OPTIONS?

Every restaurant on the island welcomes children. ALBA has a ‘Little Gourmets’ menu, Deco offers high chairs and crayons, and the sommelier can pair mocktails with any meal.

IS THE HOUSE REEF SAFE FOR KIDS?

Yes. The reef is accessible directly from the beach, and the water is shallow and calm near the shore. The resort provides child-sized snorkel gear and life vests, and the marine biologist runs daily ‘Reef Rangers’ sessions.

CAN WE ARRANGE A PRIVATE BOAT FOR DAY TRIPS?

Yes. The resort can arrange private dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) excursions for snorkelling, sandbank picnics, or sunset cruises. The butler can pack a child-friendly picnic with sandwiches and fruit.

WHAT’S THE CHECK-IN PROCESS FOR FAMILIES?

Families are greeted at the seaplane lounge with iPads showing a welcome video from their butler. Kids receive mocktails, and the butler escorts you to your villa, where child-friendly amenities are already set up.

ARE THERE ANY EXTRA COSTS FOR FAMILIES?

The kids’ club, most activities, and babysitting (up to four hours) are complimentary. Extra costs might include private excursions, premium alcohol, or spa treatments. Message Fede for a full breakdown.
