The seaplane isn’t just a transfer—it’s the first real taste of the Maldives. You step off your international flight, and within minutes, you’re boarding a Twin Otter seaplane with Trans Maldivian Airways. The engines roar, you lift off from the water, and suddenly you’re flying low over the most incredible shades of blue you’ve ever seen. The atolls stretch out like strings of pearls, and the water shifts from turquoise to deep sapphire as the depth changes. It's a property that makes you press your face to the window. I’ve done this flight more times than I can count, and it still takes my breath away.

What to expect on your seaplane transfer

The seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport is efficient but not exactly luxurious. You’ll be escorted from your international arrival to the TMA lounge, where you can wait for your flight. Some resorts have private lounges here—Joali’s is beautifully designed, while Kudadoo’s feels a bit more basic. Once you’re called to board, you’ll walk out to the tarmac where the seaplanes float on the water. The planes are small, usually seating around 15 passengers, and the noise level is high—bring earplugs if you’re sensitive to sound. The flight itself is smooth, and the views are unbeatable. You’ll fly at low altitude, giving you a perfect vantage point over the reefs and islands below.

Seaplane logistics and timing

Seaplanes only operate during daylight hours, so timing is key. If your international flight arrives in Malé after 3:30 PM, you’ll likely need to spend a night at an airport hotel and take the first seaplane out the next morning. I always recommend clients try to land in the Maldives by early afternoon to avoid this. The standard baggage allowance is 20 kg checked luggage and 5 kg hand luggage, so pack accordingly. If you’re connecting to a domestic flight or speedboat after your seaplane ride, your resort will handle the transfers seamlessly—just follow the staff’s lead.

The best resorts for seaplane transfers

Some of my favorite resorts are best reached by seaplane. Soneva Fushi, in the Baa Atoll, is a 30-minute flight from Malé, and the aerial view of its lush island and surrounding reef is stunning. Joali Being, also in the Raa Atoll, is a 45-minute seaplane ride, and the approach over its pristine lagoon is memorable. For something closer, W Maldives is just 25 minutes by seaplane, making it a great option if you want to minimize transfer time. If you’re heading to the Raa Atoll, Emerald Faarufushi is a 45-minute seaplane ride, and the views of its untouched reefs are worth the trip.

If I were planning a trip right now, Fede would book a stay at Soneva Fushi with a seaplane transfer. The flight is just long enough to soak in the views without feeling rushed, and the resort itself is one of the best in the Maldives. The honest bit

Seaplane transfers aren’t cheap, and they’re not always the most comfortable option—space is tight, and the noise can be loud. But the trade-off is the view and the convenience of getting straight to your resort. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take precautions, as the low-altitude flight can feel a bit bumpy at times. And while the seaplane terminal is functional, it’s not a luxury experience—don’t expect fine dining or spa-like amenities while you wait. But once you’re in the air, none of that matters. The Maldives from above is one of the most beautiful sights in the world, and it’s worth every minute of the journey.
