The villas: overwater, but not like the brochures

The one-bedrooms are 300 square metres with 44-square-metre infinity pools; the two-bedrooms stretch to 380 square metres. most villas have a bathtub that faces the ocean, a double vanity, and a hanging sofa on the deck that becomes the default nap spot by day three. What the photos don’t show: the villas are built with Japanese minimalism in mind—muted tones, clean lines, no clutter. That means when you fill them with your own chaos (kids, cocktails, half-unpacked suitcases), they still feel serene. The real luxury isn’t the size; it’s the fact that most villas have its own stretch of deck, so you can go a full day without seeing another guest if you want to.

Dining: unscripted, and that’s the point

There’s one main restaurant at The Retreat, the overwater hub where the bar, pool, and spa are also located. The menu is ‘unscripted’—no fixed hours, no fixed dishes. You tell the chef what you’re craving, and they’ll source it. I’ve had guests order lobster thermidor at 3 p.m. and get it delivered to their villa with a side of truffle fries. The wine cellar is stocked with bottles most resorts wouldn’t dare open for less than a table of ten. For something more structured, the seafood-specialist restaurant serves a daily catch menu that changes with the tides. The real flex, though, is private dining: sandbank picnics, jungle-style feasts under the stars, or a table set up in your villa’s pool. If you’ve ever wanted to eat sushi while floating in your own infinity pool, this is the place.

The house reef: snorkel straight from your deck

The lagoon drops off into a healthy house reef just steps from most villas. You can snorkel straight from your deck—no boat, no guide, just you and the reef. The visibility is usually 20–30 metres, and the marine life is what you’d expect in the Maldives: turtles, rays, reef sharks, and schools of fusiliers that flash silver in the sunlight. If you want to go deeper, the resort’s dive centre offers PADI courses and guided excursions to nearby thilas (underwater pinnacles). What I’d actually book

If I were booking for myself, I’d take the Ocean Pool Residence One-Bedroom. It’s the sweet spot: big enough to feel spacious, small enough to feel intimate. I’d ask Fede to block the villa at the end of the jetty—the one with the longest stretch of uninterrupted ocean view. Then Fede would book the island buyout for three nights so we could have the whole place to ourselves. For those three nights, I’d schedule a sandbank picnic at sunrise, a sunset cruise with champagne, and a private DJ set on our deck after dinner. The rest of the time? I’d leave unscripted. That’s the whole point of You & Me: you don’t plan the magic, you just show up and let it happen.

The honest bit

Let’s be clear: this isn’t a quiet retreat. If you’re looking for a resort where the loudest sound is the waves, you’ll hear the bass from the bar until midnight. The ‘all-inclusive’ tag is real, but it’s the premium version—top-shelf spirits, private excursions, and spa treatments are all included, but if you want a bottle of Petrus with dinner, you’ll pay extra. The seaplane transfer is scenic but can be bumpy; if you’re prone to motion sickness, pack Dramamine. And because the island is small, the staff-to-guest ratio is high—sometimes too high. I’ve had clients complain that the butlers can feel a little ‘present’ if you’re not used to that level of service. Finally, the island is fully solar-powered, which is impressive, but it also means the hot water can run out if most villas decides to take a long shower at the same time. It’s a small trade-off for a resort that’s genuinely trying to tread lightly.

Similarly, if you’re a solo traveler looking for peace, this isn’t the place—you’ll either feel lonely or end up adopting a group of strangers by day two.
