Dhigurah whale shark point, South Ari
One moment I was floating above nothing but blue, the next a shadow the size of a school bus glided beneath me—mouth open, filtering plankton like a living vacuum. That whale shark, a juvenile male we later named ‘Dhoni’, circled back twice, close enough that I could count the pale spots on his back. No cages, no engines, just the two of us suspended in 30 °C water. Since then guests come for hundreds of clients to the same stretch of South Ari Atoll, and every time the story comes back the same: the Maldives isn’t just a place you visit, it’s a place that visits you. Dhigurah Whale Shark Point isn’t a resort; it’s a GPS coordinate where the ocean decides to put on a show. The stage is open year-round, the actors are wild, and the only ticket you need is a sense of wonderand maybe a quick message to me so I can make sure your dhoni captain knows the unspoken rules of the reef.
HOW FAR IS DHIGURAH WHALE SHARK POINT FROM MALÉ?
A 25–35 minute seaplane ride lands you at a resort in South Ari Atoll; from there it’s a 10–30 minute dhoni ride to the MPA.
DO I NEED TO BE A STRONG SWIMMER?
No. The water is 3–5 m deep and you can stand on the sandy bottom if needed. Life jackets are provided.
WHAT’S THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO GO?
Early morning, 7–11 a.m. The water is calm, the sharks are feeding, and the light is well suited to photography.
CAN I TOUCH THE WHALE SHARKS?
No. Touching removes protective mucus and can harm the shark. The MPA code of conduct requires a 3 m distance.
HOW MANY SHARKS WILL I SEE?
It varies. On a busy day you might see six or seven; on a quiet day one or two. The average is two to three per trip.
IS THE TRIP SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?
Yes, for children over eight who are comfortable in open water. Life jackets and snorkel vests are provided.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
A rash guard with UPF 50+, board shorts or a one-piece swimsuit, and reef-safe sunscreen. The sun reflects off the water like a mirror.
DO I NEED MY OWN SNORKEL GEAR?
Resort gear is fine, but Worth recommending: bringing your own mask for a better fit and less fogging.
HOW LONG DOES THE SNORKEL TRIP LAST?
Typically 2–3 hours in the water, plus 30 minutes each way on the dhoni. Total excursion time is about 4 hours.
WHAT ELSE WILL I SEE BESIDES WHALE SHARKS?
Turtles, black-tip reef sharks, eagle rays, and schools of tropical fish. Some trips include a stop at a shallow reef for a surface interval.
