The villa itself

The Aqua Villa is one of 200 villas at Pullman Maldives, but it’s the only one with an underwater bedroom. The space is compact—around 120 square metres—but the design makes it feel larger. The acrylic wall is 180 degrees, so you can lie in bed and watch the reef without turning your head. A small staircase leads from the bedroom up to the main living area, which has a daybed, minibar, and outdoor deck with sun loungers. The bathroom is above water, with a rainfall shower that looks out to the lagoon. There’s no bathtub in the underwater section, but most guests don’t miss it—they’re too busy watching the fish.

Dining and drinks

Pullman’s all-inclusive package covers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and selected drinks at three restaurants and two bars. The main restaurant, Plantation, serves buffet-style meals with Maldivian and international dishes. For something more intimate, Kandu offers à la carte seafood and grilled meats under a thatched roof. The underwater bedroom has its own minibar stocked with beer, wine, and soft drinks, so you can sip champagne while watching the reef at midnight. The house reef

The Aqua Villa sits right on the edge of the house reef, so you can snorkel straight from the deck. The reef starts in shallow water—about three metres deep—then drops off to ten metres, where the current brings larger fish. Turtles are common, and reef sharks often cruise past the villa at dawn and dusk. Because the resort is in Lhaviyani Atoll, the visibility is usually excellent—20 to 30 metres on a good day. If you want to explore further, the dive centre offers guided snorkelling trips to nearby thilas (underwater pinnacles).

Signature experiences

The obvious highlight is waking up inside the reef. Many guests set an alarm for sunrise, when the light turns the water turquoise and the fish are most active. The villa comes with an underwater camera, so you can capture the moment without getting out of bed. For something more active, the resort offers night snorkelling with UV torches—plankton glows electric blue, and the reef looks like a different planet. If you prefer to stay dry, the overwater spa has a treatment room with a glass floor, so you can watch the fish while getting a massage.

Transfer and arrival

The journey from Malé takes about 90 minutes total. You’ll fly domestic from Velana International Airport to Ifuru Airport—50 minutes in a twin-prop plane with views of the atolls. From Ifuru, it’s a 15- to 20-minute speedboat ride to Pullman Maldives. The resort arranges all transfers, so you don’t need to book separately. If you’re coming from Europe or Asia, the domestic flight is a good chance to stretch your legs before the final leg to paradise. Worth recommending: arriving in Malé the night before if your international flight lands late—there are comfortable hotels near the airport that can hold your luggage while you explore the city.

Honeymooners who’ve chosen an all-inclusive package for budget clarity. And anyone who’s ever dreamed of falling asleep to the sound of bubbles outside their window. I don’t recommend it for families with young kids—the underwater bedroom is intimate, and the resort’s other villas are better suited for children. If you’re travelling with a group, book the Aqua Villa for one night and switch to a beach or overwater villa for the rest of your stay.

The acrylic wall is thick, but it can feel a bit like sleeping in an aquarium if you’re not used to it.
