Diving: Mantas, Whale Sharks & House Reef

South Ari Atoll’s marine protected area is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks appear year-round. Centara’s dive centre runs daily snorkelling and scuba trips to the hotspots—Maamigili Beyru, known locally as ‘Whale Shark Point’, is a 20-minute boat ride from the resort. From May to November, mantas gather at cleaning stations along the outer reef, and the dive team tracks their movements so you can swim alongside them without disturbing the coral. The house reef itself is a gentle drift dive: a 30-metre drop-off starts just 50 metres from the beach, and turtles often nap on the sandy patches between coral heads. Night dives reveal octopus and reef sharks hunting under torchlight.

The resort’s PADI 5-Star centre offers courses from Discover Scuba to Divemaster, and the boats are equipped with Nitrox for certified divers. A good rule: who want to combine diving with relaxation to book the ‘Dive & Spa’ package—two dives in the morning, then an afternoon massage to ease the nitrogen out of their shoulders.

Water Sports & Excursions

The resort’s water-sports centre sits on the main jetty, where instructors hand out gear for paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing. The lagoon is calm enough for beginners, and the team marks a snorkelling trail with underwater buoys so you can explore the shallow coral without a guide. For something livelier, the sunset dolphin cruise leaves at 4:30 pm most days—spinner dolphins often surf the boat’s wake, and the crew serves fresh pineapple juice on the return trip.

Big-game fishing charters run in the early morning, when the tuna and mahi-mahi are feeding. The boats are rigged for trolling, and the crew will clean and grill your catch for lunch if you want. I’ve guided clients who prefer a quieter morning on a sandbank picnic—just you, a blanket, and a basket of grilled fish and tropical fruit, with the boat waiting offshore.

The overwater spa pavilions are strung along the house reef, so you can hear the waves while the therapist works. The signature treatment is a 90-minute ‘Maldivian Escape’: a body scrub with crushed coconut shell, followed by a massage using warm coconut oil infused with frangipani. The spa also offers reflexology and hot-stone therapy, and the menu includes a ‘Jet Lag Reviver’ for guests who arrive exhausted after long flights. Couples can book side-by-side pavilions for tandem treatments.

Kids Club: Crafts, Games & Maldivian Culture

The Camp Safari kids club is open from 9 am to 5 pm for children aged 4 to 12. The space is bright and airy, with low tables for crafts and a small stage for puppet shows. The programme mixes Maldivian culture with classic resort activities: kids learn to weave palm leaves, make coconut jewellery, and play traditional games like ‘bashi’ (a local version of hopscotch). The club also organises sandcastle competitions on the beach and treasure hunts around the island. Parents can drop off their children for a few hours or book a full-day programme that includes lunch and snacks.
