Snorkelling & diving: the house reef at your doorstep

The villa’s private steps lead directly into Jawakara’s house reef, a shallow coral garden that begins about ten metres from the deck. Snorkelling here is as simple as slipping on a mask and floating over brain corals and staghorn thickets while butterflyfish dart between the branches. Visibility usually hovers around 20–30 metres, so the reef feels closer than it is—turtles glide past at arm’s length, and eagle rays sometimes cruise the sandy channels at dawn.

For divers, the resort’s on-site PADI centre runs two-tank morning dives that start right off the beach. The same house reef continues below the surface, dropping to 18 metres in places and hosting nurse sharks, moray eels, and the occasional reef shark. Night dives are offered twice a week; the reef transforms after dark, with lobsters emerging from crevices and bioluminescent plankton swirling in the current. If you’re working toward a certification, the dive team can structure a multi-day course around your villa schedule—no need to leave the property.

Fishing: sunset lines and dhoni charters

Jawakara’s fishing calendar revolves around the golden hour. The resort keeps a fleet of traditional dhonis, each rigged with hand lines and outriggers for trolling. Sunset trips last about three hours and target barracuda, trevally, and the occasional mahi-mahi. The crew cleans and fillets whatever you catch, and the kitchen will grill it for dinner if you ask—nothing tastes fresher than sashimi made from a fish you hooked an hour earlier.

For serious anglers, full-day big-game charters can be arranged through the activities desk. These trips head to the outer atolls where dogtooth tuna and sailfish run in deeper water. The dhoni is stocked with rods, lures, and cold drinks, and the skipper knows the hotspots well enough to put you on fish even when the bite is slow. Back at the villa, your butler can chill the fillets and arrange a private barbecue on the deck.

Tennis under floodlights

The resort’s single tennis court sits on the northern tip of the island, surrounded by palms that rustle in the trade winds. Floodlights keep the court playable until 10 p.m., so matches can stretch into the cooler evening hours. Rackets and balls are provided at the activities hut, and the butler will deliver towels and iced water between sets. If you’re travelling with kids, the court doubles as a space for badminton or paddleball—just ask the team to set up the nets.
