Where Athuruga is smaller and more intimate, Thudufushi has more space and more activity programming on the island. Both properties share the same generous Italian-brand all-inclusive operation. The villa lineup covers beach and over-water with the standard mix of categories. Thudufushi's reef is solid, accessible from shore in multiple sections, and the property is positioned well for the South Ari Marine Protected Area whale shark excursions that run year-round. The dive operation handles daily programmes. Three restaurants cover the kitchen. The 32 Beach Junior Suites add a separate seating area and a larger terrace, well suited to families who need a little extra space. Over the water, the 14 standard Water Villas and 7 Jacuzzi Water Villas give you direct access to the lagoon via a private ladder, while the two Two-Bedroom Water Villas are the only ones with a full kitchen—useful if you’re travelling with older kids or another couple. Every water villa has a glass floor panel so you can watch the fish while you brush your teeth, and the Jacuzzi villas add an outdoor bathtub on the deck. The third restaurant, L’Olivo, is the fine-dining option, with a seven-course tasting menu that changes weekly and a wine cellar stocked with Italian labels. If you’re celebrating something special, book the private table on the jetty; it’s just the two of you, the ocean, and a waiter who appears only when you need him. The reef starts right at the waterline, so you can snorkel straight from the beach or your water villa. The resort’s biologists run daily guided snorkels, pointing out everything from tiny nudibranchs to the resident hawksbill turtles. South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the Maldives where whale sharks are seen year-round, and the dive centre keeps a log of recent sightings so you can time your snorkel trip. The reef itself is a mix of hard and soft corals, with plenty of swim-throughs and overhangs where reef sharks like to nap. If you’re new to snorkelling, the biologists will give you a quick briefing on how to read the currents—important in this part of the atoll, where the channel brings in big pelagics. For divers, the house reef is just the start; the dive centre runs trips to nearby sites like Maaya Thila, a pinnacle famous for its schools of jackfish and eagle rays.

They also run daily marine biology talks, covering topics like coral bleaching, manta ray behaviour, and how to identify the different species of reef sharks. If you’ve ever wanted to try underwater photography, the biologists will lend you a camera and show you how to get the best shots of the resident turtles. The resort’s location in South Ari Atoll means you’re close to some of the best dive sites in the Maldives, including the famous whale shark aggregation area. The dive centre keeps a boat ready for sunrise trips, so you can be in the water before the other resorts even serve breakfast. For non-divers, the biologists also run glass-bottom boat tours and guided snorkels, so you can still see the big stuff without getting wet.

Transfers—quick and scenic

The seaplane transfer from Malé takes just 25 minutes, so you’re in the water before most guests have even checked in. Families with older kids will appreciate the two-bedroom water villas and the marine biology talks, though there’s no kids club, so it’s not well-suited to parents with toddlers. If you’re celebrating an anniversary or a special occasion, the resort can arrange private dinners on the beach or in your villa, and the staff will go out of their way to make it memorable.

The honest bit

The resort doesn’t have a kids club, so families with young children might find it less convenient than some of the bigger resorts in the atoll. The island is small—just 190 by 200 metres—so if you’re someone who likes to walk for hours, you're circling the same paths. The main restaurant is buffet-style for breakfast and lunch, which is fine for most meals but can feel a little impersonal if you’re used to a la carte service. That said, the food is consistently good, and the fine-dining restaurant more than makes up for it.
