I stayed at Nooe Kunaavashi in Vaavu Atoll, and the first thing worth saying is that it's a short hop — twenty to twenty-five minutes by seaplane from Velana — so you're in the water the same afternoon you land.

It's a small island, seventy-two villas, all with private pools across the Beach, Sunset, and Overwater categories. The design is the newest hardware in Vaavu, which is the real reason to pick it over the older properties out here. The reef is decent — fine if you're a casual snorkeller, but it's not the headline reason to come. The case for Nooe is the short transfer, the design-led villas, and Vaavu's dive variety on your doorstep — not the house reef.

Why people come here

This is one of the few islands I'd recommend to honeymooners and to families in the same breath, and that's down to the size. Seventy-two villas spaced out enough that you're not tripping over other guests, but a big enough footprint to carry a proper kids club and a dive centre running daily trips to Vaavu's channels. Couples get the privacy, parents get the break. What I kept hearing from both was the same short list: nurse sharks in the lagoon at dawn, and staff who had my name down after a single day. And because the seaplane transfer is twenty to twenty-five minutes, you're snorkelling before lunch on arrival day rather than burning the afternoon in a lounge.

The villas: space and privacy

Three categories — Beach, Sunset, Overwater — and all seventy-two have private pools and outdoor showers, so you're not making a mistake whichever you book. For couples I'd point you at the Sunset Villas. They sit on the western tip, the deck takes two loungers and a daybed, and you get the last light off the water without leaving your villa. The Overwater Villas put you closer to the dive centre, which earns its keep if you're diving multiple days, and the glass floor panel is a genuinely good touch at night. Fede's tip: tell him which you care about more — sunsets or dive proximity — because they sit at opposite ends of a small island and you can't have both.

Dining: three restaurants, five cuisines

Three venues across five cuisines, and dining is a genuine strength here rather than the usual single-restaurant compromise. The main restaurant runs buffet breakfast and à la carte dinner across Maldivian, Japanese, and Mediterranean — I had the tuna tataki there and it held up against anything I've eaten in Malé. The Italian does wood-fired pizzas at lunch and dinner. The splurge is the open-fire grill on the beach, where the menu changes daily and you're looking at lobster, wagyu, or whole fish over coconut husks. The wine list is short but chosen with some care — I found Italian and Australian bottles that paired well with the seafood, which isn't a given out here.

The house reef: nurse sharks and easy access

Let me be straight about the reef, because it's where Nooe is decent rather than exceptional. It starts at the beach and drops into a sandy lagoon, you snorkel straight off the shore with no boat, and the resort hands you masks and fins. Early morning is the time — that's when the nurse sharks come along the reef edge, and it's the best thing the reef does. Past the lagoon the wall drops to about thirty metres and the dive centre runs daily trips to the channels where the mantas and eagle rays actually are. So: solid for a casual snorkeller, and the diving off-island is the real payoff. If the house reef is the headline reason you're booking a Maldives trip, this isn't the one — but for most people it's perfectly fine.

Signature experiences: yoga, diving, and starlit dinners

Sunrise yoga on the beach is in the rate, which I'd take advantage of — gentle enough for beginners but the instructor will push you if you ask. The dive centre runs PADI courses up to Divemaster and daily trips to Vaavu's dive sites, and that's where this island earns its keep for divers. For a quieter day, the cooking class teaches you mas huni and garudhiya, and the starlit beach dinners come with a seafood, meat, or vegetarian platter, blankets and lanterns sorted. None of it is reinventing the wheel, but it's well run, and on an island this size you can do the lot without it feeling like a logistics exercise.

Transfer: quick and scenic

This is one of the easier transfers in the country: twenty to twenty-five minutes by seaplane from Velana, arranged through Maldivian. Short enough to be painless, long enough to get the view of the lagoons and sandbars on the way in. The one thing to get right is luggage — seaplanes want soft bags only and no more than twenty kilograms per person, so don't overpack. If you land late, Fede usually steers people to the Hulhulé Island Hotel for the night; it's a five-minute speedboat from the airport and saves you a stressful early start.

Who it suits

Book it if you're a couple wanting romance and a bit of adventure in the same trip — Sunset Villas for the honeymoon, dive centre for the days you want to do something. It works for families with kids five and up; the kids club is small but well run and the shallow lagoon is safe to swim. Wellness travellers get the beach massages and the morning yoga. Really it suits anyone who wants an island that feels personal but still carries a proper dive centre, a kids club, and three restaurants — which at seventy-two villas is a balance Nooe gets right. Where I'd hesitate: if your whole trip hinges on a world-class house reef, look elsewhere.

The honest bit

Nooe isn't flawless and I'd rather you knew the trade-offs before you book. The island is tiny — 87 by 190 metres — so you'll cross it in five minutes. Great if you hate a long walk to dinner, but there's no real "exploring" to be had here. The house reef is decent and fine for casual snorkelling, but it's honestly not the headline reason to come; you'll get nurse sharks and colourful fish off the beach, but the mantas and eagle rays are a boat ride away, not on your doorstep. And the resort is still young — the palms are small and the landscaping hasn't filled in yet, so it doesn't have the lived-in, grown-over feel of the older Vaavu islands. None of that is a dealbreaker; just go in knowing what it is.
