Reethi Rah
Diving: the house reef and beyond
The house reef at Reethi Rah is a living corridor that runs the length of the island. Snorkellers can step off the beach and find themselves among schools of anthias, black-tip reef sharks, and the occasional hawksbill turtle. Visibility typically hovers around 25–30 metres, and the reef flat is shallow enough for beginners to wade out at low tide.
The dive centre, a PADI 5-star facility, schedules two boat dives daily. Sites within 15 minutes include Manta Point (seasonal), Banana Reef (dramatic overhangs), and the wreck of the Kudhimaa, a 30-metre cargo ship intentionally sunk in 2001. Night dives are offered twice weekly; expect sleeping parrotfish, moray eels, and the occasional nurse shark.
Gear is well-maintained: Scubapro regulators, Aqualung BCDs, and full-face masks for those who prefer them. Nitrox is free for certified divers. The centre also runs a daily reef-cleanup snorkel; guests who participate receive a certificate and a reusable water bottle.
- Two boat dives daily, weather permitting
- Night dives twice weekly
- Free nitrox for certified divers
- Reef-cleanup snorkel with certificate
- PADI courses from Open Water to Divemaster
Water sports: from kayaks to kites
The water-sports centre sits beside the main jetty, a thatched pavilion stocked with equipment that looks new even at midday. Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are free for the first hour; after that, a small fee applies. Glass-bottom kayaks are available for those who want to drift over the reef without getting wet.
Windsurfers and catamarans are complimentary for guests, though lessons carry a charge. Kitesurfing is seasonal—best from May to October when the trade winds blow consistently. The resort partners with a local school; beginners can book a three-day package that includes gear, instruction, and a rescue boat on standby.
For something slower, the centre offers sunset paddleboard yoga twice weekly. Mats are provided; the only requirement is that you can balance while the sun dips below the horizon.
- Free first-hour kayaks and paddleboards
- Glass-bottom kayaks for reef viewing
- Complimentary windsurfing and catamarans
- Kitesurfing packages (seasonal)
- Sunset paddleboard yoga twice weekly
Spa: treatments with local ingredients
The spa at Reethi Rah is a cluster of overwater and beachfront pavilions linked by wooden walkways. Treatments use coconut oil, frangipani, and local honey—ingredients sourced from nearby islands. The signature massage, the ‘Maldivian Journey’, begins with a foot scrub of crushed coral and sea salt, followed by a full-body massage that incorporates stretching techniques borrowed from dhoni sailors.
For couples, the ‘Sunset Duet’ is a side-by-side massage in an overwater pavilion with glass floors. The therapist times the session so the final strokes coincide with the last light over the lagoon. Afterward, guests are served fresh coconut water and a platter of tropical fruit.
The spa also offers a ‘Reef Recovery’ package: a 90-minute session that includes a marine-biology talk, a guided snorkel, and a post-snorkel massage designed to ease lactic acid buildup. It’s popular with divers who want to combine education and relaxation.
- Signature ‘Maldivian Journey’ massage
- Couples ‘Sunset Duet’ in overwater pavilion
- ‘Reef Recovery’ package for divers
- Local ingredients: coconut oil, frangipani, honey
- Glass-floor treatment rooms
Kids club: more than colouring books
The kids club at Reethi Rah is called ‘The Den’, a two-storey building painted in primary colours that sits near the main pool. The ground floor is for children aged 4–12; the upper floor is a teen lounge with bean bags, board games, and a PlayStation. Both areas are air-conditioned and supervised by staff trained in early-childhood education.
The daily schedule is posted on a whiteboard by the entrance. Activities include treasure hunts, Maldivian cooking classes (kids make coconut roti), and reef-education sessions led by the dive centre. On Wednesdays, the club hosts a ‘Pirate Day’: face painting, a mini obstacle course, and a treasure hunt that ends with a chocolate-coin prize.
For younger guests, there’s a shaded outdoor play area with a sandpit, swings, and a shallow wading pool. Babysitting is available on request; staff can bring meals to the club so parents can enjoy a quiet lunch.
- Ages 4–12 on ground floor, teens upstairs
- Daily schedule posted by entrance
- Maldivian cooking classes and reef education
- ‘Pirate Day’ every Wednesday
- Outdoor play area with sandpit and wading pool
Excursions: sandbanks and sunset cruises
Reethi Rah’s excursions are run by the water-sports team, not an outside operator. The most popular is the sandbank picnic: a 20-minute dhoni ride to a tiny island that appears only at low tide. Guests are dropped with a picnic hamper (grilled fish, salads, fresh fruit) and left to wade, sunbathe, or build sandcastles for two hours.
Sunset cruises are offered three evenings a week. The dhoni is stocked with champagne, canapés, and blankets for when the breeze picks up. On full-moon nights, the resort adds a ‘Moonlight Snorkel’: guests swim with bioluminescent plankton while staff shine UV torches to highlight the glow.
For something more active, the resort arranges fishing trips at dawn. Guests can choose between big-game fishing (marlin, sailfish) or reef fishing (groupers, snappers). The catch is cleaned and cooked for lunch or dinner—either at the resort or on a private beach.
- Sandbank picnic (2 hours, low tide only)
- Sunset cruises three evenings weekly
- Full-moon ‘Moonlight Snorkel’ with UV torches
- Dawn fishing trips (big-game or reef)
