The resort’s main appeal is its originality - Soneva Fushi feels less like a conventional resort and more like a private island village hidden inside dense tropical vegetation. Villas are extremely spacious and sit mostly within the jungle or along the beach, with a design language that is natural, informal and highly recognisable.

The Baa Atoll setting adds real substance, with access to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and seasonal marine-life experiences in the wider area. Dining, wellness, children’s facilities and experiences are extensive, making the resort work well for both families and couples.

Soneva Fushi is best for travellers who want space, privacy, barefoot luxury, sustainability and one of the most distinctive resort identities in the Maldives. It is especially strong for families who want serious villas and a resort with depth beyond the beach.

The sunrise side has some of the best beaches in the 6★ segment with minimal erosion. Reservations team has been a notable weak point but the on-island experience is consistently outstanding. 2-bedroom villas price out competitively against equivalent 6★ multi-bedroom keys elsewhere. The Villas

Soneva Fushi's villas are spacious, laid-back, and deliberately understated. Thatched roofs of palm-tree leaves, generous open-air bathrooms, private paths from the villa to the soft sand. The accommodation programme covers one-bedroom Crusoe Villas through to multi-bedroom Reserves, all hidden among banyan and palm trees with thick vegetation providing genuine privacy. The hardware feels residential rather than hotel-spec — many villas have outdoor showers, sand floors in the bathrooms, and design details that lean into the natural setting rather than masking it. The multi-bedroom Reserves are some of the strongest family villas in the country at any rate, with separate kids' wings and dedicated outdoor play areas. Across the range, the look is intentionally unfinished — Soneva sells imperfection as part of the aesthetic, and the villas reflect that throughout.

Dining

Soneva Fushi's kitchen is the deepest in the country. The half-board plan operates as a near-true all-inclusive across multiple restaurants, with credits at most venues comfortably above what you'd actually spend in a meal. The signature venues handle the headline dinners — fresh garden produce, Japanese, Levantine, and Mediterranean rotations across the week. The famous chocolate, cheese, ice cream, and cold-cut rooms are open through the day at no charge and make ordering a separate lunch optional. Sandbank picnics, in-villa private dining, and an astronomical dinner cruise are bookable as separate experiences. The kitchen handles bespoke requests well and the team adjusts to dietary requirements without friction. Food is one of the genuine reasons to book Soneva Fushi over the smaller boutique competitors in the same band.

The House Reef

Soneva Fushi is renowned for having one of the best house reefs in the Maldives. The resort's house reef, known as Fish Soup Reef, is easily accessible from the beach and offers superb snorkeling opportunities. The reef is home to a diverse range of marine life, including turtles and dolphins. The resort's PADI-certified dive center offers excursions to over 30 dive sites, providing guests with the opportunity to explore the underwater wonders of the Indian Ocean.

The honest bit

Soneva Fushi is not sleek, shiny or conventionally glamorous. The style is intentionally rustic-luxury, with a strong jungle feel and natural materials but it is still one of the most expensive properties in the archipelago. Guests who want polished marble, sharp contemporary interiors or a more formal five-star look may prefer a different resort.

The island is large and the villas are spread out, which gives excellent privacy but also means guests should expect to move around by bicycle or buggy. It does not feel like a tiny, compact island. Also - the sunset side is not all that private, so guests looking for unobstructed views should really avoid this side of the Island.

Soneva Fushi is strongest for guests who understand and like the barefoot-luxury concept. It is less suited to travellers who want glossy hotel-style luxury, a very small island or a minimalist contemporary design language.
