Maldives Visa for Turks

The good news? Turks need zero paperwork before they fly. The Maldives gives every Turkish passport holder a free 30-day visa on arrival—no embassy visit, no online form, no fee. Just land at Velana International Airport, hand over your passport (make sure it’s valid for at least six months), show your return ticket and resort confirmation, and you’re through immigration in under ten minutes. A good rule: to screenshot the resort voucher on their phone; the immigration officer barely glances at it. Turkish Airlines flies direct from Istanbul to Malé three times a week, so the whole journey—door to resort—can be done in under twelve hours. That’s faster than most European beach breaks, and with a lot fewer forms to fill out.

Why the Maldives is the easiest luxury trip for Turks

Turkish Airlines’ direct flight from Istanbul to Malé takes around nine hours—shorter than the flight to New York. Once you land, the Maldives immigration counter is right in the arrivals hall, and the officer stamps your passport without asking for anything beyond the basics: passport, return ticket, and proof you’ve booked a resort. No bank statements, no invitation letters, no yellow-fever certificates. The whole process is designed to get you to your overwater villa before sunset.

What you actually need to bring

Passport: six months validity from the day you land. If your passport expires in five months, renew it before you book the flight. Return ticket: a screenshot on your phone is fine; the officer just wants to see you’re leaving within 30 days. Resort confirmation: again, a screenshot or email is enough. No need to print anything. That’s it. The Maldives doesn’t ask for proof of funds, travel insurance, or vaccination records. Turkish Airlines check-in staff might ask for the resort voucher when you drop your bags in Istanbul, so keep it handy.

The online form you do need to fill out

It’s a quick online form: name, passport number, flight details, resort name, and a health declaration. You’ll get a QR code to show at immigration. The same form is required again when you depart. I remind clients to set a calendar alert 48 hours before their flight so they don’t forget. The form is free and takes less than five minutes.

What you can’t bring into the Maldives

Alcohol: the Maldives is a Muslim country, and customs will confiscate any alcohol you bring. Resorts serve international brands, so you won’t miss it. Pork: also confiscated. Vape products: banned since November 2024. If you bring them, they’ll be taken at customs. Cigarettes: you can bring up to 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco. Anything over that limit is taxed. A good rule: to leave the duty-free cigarettes at home; the resort shop sells the same brands at similar prices.

Money and payments

US dollars are the easiest currency to use. Resorts price everything in dollars, and you can pay your bill with a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express). Turkish lira is not accepted anywhere. Worth recommending: withdrawing a small amount of dollars before you fly—enough for tips and the seaplane terminal café. Velana Airport has ATMs, but the lines can be long. Resorts add a 10% service charge and 12% GST to every bill, so factor that into your budget.

What happens if you overstay your 30-day visa

The Maldives immigration system is strict but fair. If you overstay by a day or two, you’ll pay a fine of around $50 at the airport. Overstay by more than three days, and the fine jumps to $10 per day. I’ve had one client who miscalculated their return date and had to pay the fine; the officer was polite, but the process took an extra 20 minutes. Set a reminder on your phone for 28 days after arrival so you don’t forget.

Departure: the last form and COVID-19 testing

Before you fly home, you’ll fill out the IMUGA departure form again. If your home country or airline requires a COVID-19 test, the resort can arrange one. Most resorts have a clinic on-site or a doctor who visits daily. The test takes 15 minutes, and results are ready in a few hours. Turkish Airlines doesn’t currently ask for a test, but A good rule: to check the airline’s website a week before departure—rules change fast.

Why Turks choose the Maldives over other beach destinations

guests come for Turkish honeymooners to the Seychelles and families to Mauritius, but the Maldives keeps winning. The direct flight from Istanbul is the biggest factor. No layovers, no extra visas, no language barrier at immigration. The resorts are also designed for privacy: overwater villas with glass floors, private pools, and butlers who speak Turkish. Turkish Airlines’ baggage allowance—30 kg in economy—means you can pack enough swimsuits for a month. And because the Maldives is a 100% resort-based destination, you don’t have to worry about navigating local transport or finding a restaurant that serves halal food. at most resorts is self-contained, so you can relax from the moment you land.

The honest bit

The Maldives isn’t cheap, but Turks who book through me get the same rates as online travel sites—plus free upgrades and late checkout when available. The 30-day visa is free, but the resort transfer (seaplane or speedboat) isn’t. I always include the transfer cost in the initial quote so there are no surprises. And while the Maldives is safe, it’s not a party destination. If you’re looking for nightlife, Dubai or Bodrum might be a better fit. But if you want a week of quiet luxury with polished snorkelling, the Maldives is the easiest option for Turks.
