The Maldives has a reputation for incredible underwater life, and most of it is true — but house reefs are not equal. Some resorts sit on a sandy lagoon and you have to take a boat to see anything; others have a wall starting forty metres from the beach, with reef sharks, turtles, and giant napoleon wrasse on every snorkel. If snorkelling is the centrepiece of the trip, these are the nine Good for people to.

Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll has some of the best untouched reef systems in the country, and Ayada sits right on top of one of them. The house reef is a genuine wall starting off the beach, with reef sharks and turtles common. Far south, longer transfer — but worth it for serious snorkellers.
Same atoll as Ayada (Gaafu Dhaalu), same calibre of reef ecosystem at a softer price point. The house reef wraps most of the island, and you can drift snorkel parts of it on incoming tide. Best paired with a few in-water excursions to nearby thilas.
North Ari, with one of the best directly-accessible house reefs in the country. The drop-off is right in front of the overwater villas. Reef sharks and eagle rays rotate through. A serious snorkel destination dressed up as a lifestyle hotel.
South Ari, smaller-scale, with an unusually rich house reef given the resort's price point. Whale shark excursions out of Maamigili are right next door, which is the closer reason to book it.
North Ari, twenty-something villas, and a circular reef you can swim around the entire island. One of the best house-reef-to-island-size ratios in the country. The kind of place where you snorkel four times a day without trying.
Lhaviyani Atoll, with the reef dropping off almost from the villa steps. Fifteen villas means almost no other snorkellers in the water at the same time. Borderline private-reef feel.
Baa Atoll, in an atoll famous for manta season at Hanifaru Bay. The house reef is excellent year-round, and the resort sits in a part of Baa with consistent visibility. Manta excursions to Hanifaru run from June to November.
Same atoll as Kihavah (Baa), same reef ecosystem, more intimate feel. Easy to combine with Hanifaru Bay excursions during manta season.
Also in Baa. Smaller and more boutique than Kihavah, with an excellent house reef that's especially active at dawn and dusk. Hanifaru access during manta season makes it the third leg of the Baa snorkel trinity.
