Subsix sits six metres beneath the surface, directly on the house reef. The structure is a single acrylic tunnel, 24 metres long, with a slight curve that gives every diner an unobstructed view of the passing marine parade. Our research describes the setting as “enchanting,” and that’s the word guests use most often in reviews—enchanting, not gimmicky. The lighting is soft, the water outside filters sunlight into shifting turquoise patterns on the white tablecloths, and the sound of bubbles rising along the glass adds a quiet soundtrack.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. There’s no dress code beyond resort casual, but Fede tells clients to bring a light wrap; the air conditioning is set to keep the wine cool, not the diners. The marine show: who swims by

The reef outside Subsix is part of Niyama’s house reef, accessible from the beach. Our research doesn’t list every species, but it confirms the restaurant’s windows frame “healthy marine life.” Regulars include parrotfish, butterflyfish, and schools of sergeant majors that dart in unison. Hawksbill turtles are occasional visitors, and eagle rays sometimes glide past at eye level. The fish are accustomed to diners, so they don’t scatter when someone presses a hand against the glass.

Lunch and dinner offer different casts. During the day, the reef is bathed in sunlight, and the fish are active. At night, the restaurant’s exterior lights attract nocturnal species like squirrelfish and cardinalfish. If you’re lucky, you might see a reef shark patrolling the outer edge of the coral. Subsix is the headline, but Niyama’s relationship with the ocean doesn’t end there. For divers, the house reef drops to 30 metres, and the dive centre runs daily trips to nearby thilas—underwater pinnacles concentrated with fish. If you’re certified, ask Fede to arrange a night dive; the reef transforms after dark, with lobsters, crabs, and sleeping parrotfish tucked into coral crevices.

For non-divers, the resort’s water-sports centre offers kayaks and paddleboards, but the real draw is the chance to swim alongside the same fish you watched from Subsix. The lagoon is calm, the water is warm, and the reef is never more than a short swim from shore. Fede recommends bringing an underwater camera; the visibility often exceeds 20 metres, and the colours pop against the white sand.

Who should book Subsix

Subsix is well-suited to couples celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon, but it’s not exclusively romantic. Families with older children (12+) can book a table, and the restaurant’s daytime menu is relaxed enough for a casual lunch. Our research doesn’t mention a kids’ menu, so parents should message Fede to confirm options. Solo travellers are also welcome, and the bar area is a great spot to strike up a conversation with other diners.

Fede’s advice: message him on WhatsApp as soon as you know your travel dates. He’ll handle the reservation, confirm transfer times (typically a 30-minute speedboat from Male or nearby resorts), and ensure your table is waiting when you arrive. The restaurant doesn’t publish its capacity, but Fede estimates it seats around 30 guests at a time. (December to March), tables fill weeks in advance, so early planning is key.

If you’re staying at Niyama, Subsix is a short walk from the villas. The resort’s butlers can escort you to the restaurant, or you can follow the lantern-lit path that winds through the jungle. Our research doesn’t mention a dress code for the walk, but Fede recommends sandals or flip-flops; the path is sandy, and the restaurant’s entrance is at water level.
