Velaa Private Island

Why Velaa works for honeymooners

Most Maldives resorts are designed for romance, but few are designed for *your* romance. Velaa’s scale—just 47 villas in total—means the staff can tailor everything to you. The butlers aren’t just there to refill your minibar; they’re there to make sure your stay feels like it was built around your whims. That might mean arranging a private sandbank dinner with a chef and a single table, or it might mean simply remembering that you take your coffee with oat milk and two sugars.

The island itself is small enough to feel intimate but large enough to offer real variety. You can walk its circumference in under 30 minutes, but along the way you’ll find a golf course, a climbing wall, a kids’ club (useful if you want a few hours to yourselves), and two spas. The circular shape means you’re never far from your villa—or from the beach, which is soft, white, and always quiet.

A good rule: that Velaa is one of the few places where you can be as active or as lazy as you want without feeling like you’re missing out. Want to spend a day trying every water sport the resort offers? They’ve got a jetpack, a flyboard, and a private yacht. Prefer to lie in a hammock with a book and a cocktail? The staff will make sure no one disturbs you.

Romantic experiences

  • **Private sandbank dinners**: The resort owns a nearby sandbank and can set up a single table, a chef, and a waiter for an evening. No other guests, no distractions—just you, your partner, and a sunset that looks like it was painted for you.
  • **Aragu’s tasting menus**: The fine-dining restaurant is built over the water and serves multi-course meals with wine pairings. The menu is personalised to your tastes, and the pianist plays requests. It’s the kind of place where you’ll remember the food, the music, and the way your partner looked across the table.
  • **Sunset dolphin cruises**: The resort’s yacht takes you out to spot dolphins at dusk. The crew serves champagne and canapés, and the only other people on board are the two of you.
  • **Couples’ spa treatments**: The spa has overwater treatment rooms with glass floors so you can watch fish swim beneath you while you’re massaged. They also offer a ‘snow room’—a chilled space where you can cool off after a sauna.
  • **Teppanyaki at Tavaru**: The restaurant is built atop a three-story tower with a wine cellar below. The chef cooks in front of you, and the views over the island are spectacular. It’s a fun, interactive way to spend an evening together.

The villas: privacy and space

Velaa’s villas are designed for couples who want space and privacy. The smallest category, the Deluxe Beach Pool Villa, is 320 square metres—larger than many city apartments. It includes a private pool, a sun deck with daybeds, and direct beach access. The bathroom has his-and-hers vanities and a standalone bathtub with ocean views.

For honeymooners, the Romantic Pool Residence is worth considering. It’s only accessible by boat, which makes it feel like your own private island. The villa has a larger pool, a gazebo for dining, and a butler who’s dedicated just to you. The design is lighter and more contemporary than the standard villas, with woven raffia palms and handmade carpets.

The overwater villas are equally private. Each one sits on its own jetty, so you’re not sharing a walkway with other guests. The sunrise and sunset options mean you can choose your view—east for morning light, west for golden hour.

The food: a global feast

Velaa’s dining is a highlight for honeymooners. The resort has just four restaurants, but each one offers something special. Athiri, the main beachfront restaurant, serves a buffet breakfast with over 120 dishes—everything from fresh sushi to Czech pastries. For lunch and dinner, it transforms into an à la carte spot with Asian, Italian, and Maldivian options.

Aragu, the fine-dining restaurant, is where you’ll want to celebrate. The tasting menus change regularly but always include standout dishes like black cod with miso and wagyu beef. The wine list is one of the best in the Maldives, and the sommeliers will help you pair each course.

Tavaru, the teppanyaki restaurant, is a fun alternative. The chef cooks in front of you, and the menu includes lobster, scallops, and A5 wagyu. The wine cellar below the restaurant is worth a visit even if you’re not dining there—it’s one of the largest in the Maldives.

For something more casual, Avi is the poolside bar. It serves light bites, cocktails, and fresh juices. The bartenders are happy to make something off-menu if you ask.

The little things that matter

It’s the small details that make Velaa feel special for honeymooners. The resort offers a ‘honeymoon package’ that includes a bottle of champagne on arrival, a private sandbank dinner, and a couples’ massage. But even without the package, the staff go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

One of my favourite touches is the turndown service. Instead of a generic chocolate on your pillow, the staff leave something personal—a handwritten note, a small gift, or a dessert you mentioned loving earlier in the day. It's a property that makes you feel like the resort was built just for you.

The resort also offers a ‘stay list’—a questionnaire you fill out before arrival with your preferences. Do you like your room warm or cool? Do you have any dietary restrictions? What’s your favourite drink? The staff use this to personalise your stay, from the temperature of your villa to the snacks in your minibar.

When to go

Velaa is a year-round destination, but the best weather is between December and April. This is also the busiestand most expensive—time to visit. If you’re looking for a quieter, more affordable honeymoon, consider May or October. The weather is still warm, and the resort is less crowded. The staff are also more attentive when there are fewer guests, which can make your stay feel even more special.

Christmas and New Year are particularly magical at Velaa. The resort decorates the island with lights and offers a full schedule of festive activities, from gingerbread house-making to beach parties. The Christmas Eve buffet is legendary, with live music, acrobats, and a menu that includes everything from oysters to wagyu beef.

Getting there

Velaa is a 45-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport. The resort has its own private lounge at the seaplane terminal, where you can wait in comfort before your flight. If you’re arriving by private jet, you can land at Maafaru International Airport, which is just 30 minutes by speedboat from Velaa.

The seaplane transfer is part of the experience. As you fly over the atolls, you’ll see the Maldives’ famous blue-green lagoons and tiny islands from above. It’s a striking way to start your honeymoon.

A note on accuracy. Travel facts shift — villa counts get added, restaurants reopen under new chefs, transfer schedules change with the seasons.
