Why people come here

Hurawalhi is one of the few adults-only resorts in the Maldives that still feels intimate. Ninety villas might sound like a crowd, but the island is shaped like a crescent moon—long and narrow—so most villas have a slice of beach and a private stretch of lagoon. The overwater villas sit on stilts above the reef, while the beach villas are tucked behind dunes planted with sea grape and screw pine. I’ve watched couples spend entire mornings in their villa pools, then wade straight into the house reef without ever putting on shoes. The resort’s all-inclusive package removes the mental math of ordering another cocktail or booking a sunset cruise; you simply decide what you want and it appears. That kind of freedom is what turns a good holiday into a great one.

The villas

There are two main villa categories: Beach Villas and Ocean Villas. The Beach Villas measure 110 square metres, with a private garden, outdoor shower, and a deck that spills onto the sand. Inside, the bed faces a glass wall that slides open to the sea breeze. The Ocean Villas are larger—130 square metresand sit on stilts above the lagoon. Each has a private infinity pool, a sun deck with daybeds, and a glass floor panel so you can watch fish swim beneath you while you brush your teeth. Both categories come with a butler who can turn your deck into a private dining room or set up a floating breakfast in the pool. Fede guides honeymooners to an Ocean Villa; the glass floor is the kind of detail that makes a stay memorable.

Dining

Hurawalhi has four restaurants and bars. Canneli is the main buffet, open for breakfast and lunch, with a live cooking station and a juice bar that blends fresh pineapple, mint, and ginger. Kashibo is the à-la-carte restaurant where the black cod with miso glaze is a guest favourite. JFK is the poolside grill, serving burgers and salads under a thatched roof. But the star is 5.8, the underwater restaurant. The dining room sits 5.8 metres below sea level, encased in a curved acrylic tunnel. You descend a spiral staircase and suddenly you’re surrounded by reef fish, turtles, and the occasional reef shark. The menu changes seasonally, but the lobster thermidor and the Maldivian yellowfin tuna are staples. Reservations are essential—it’s the only adults-only underwater restaurant in the Maldives, and it seats just fourteen guests at a time.

The house reef

The reef starts a few metres from the beach and wraps around the entire island. The shallow lagoon is well suited to beginners; you can snorkel in waist-deep water and still see clownfish, parrotfish, and the occasional hawksbill turtle. The drop-off is where the action is—blacktip reef sharks patrol the edge, and if you’re lucky you’ll spot eagle rays gliding past. The resort provides complimentary snorkelling gear and a marine biologist who leads guided snorkels twice a day. A good rule: to bring an underwater camera; the visibility is often thirty metres, so every shot looks like a screensaver.

Signature experiences

The resort’s signature experience is the Dream Island picnic. A ten-minute speedboat ride takes you to a sandbank shared with the sister property, Kudadoo. The crew sets up a shaded cabana, a champagne bar, and a spread of canapés and fresh fruit. You can swim, sunbathe, or simply lie on the sand and watch the tide come in. Back at the resort, the Bella yacht is available for private charters—half-day or full-day—to nearby reefs or deserted islands. For something quieter, the Sulha Spa offers couples’ treatments in overwater pavilions with glass floors. The ‘Serenity Ritual’ starts with a foot bath of warm coconut milk and ends with a massage using local sandalwood oil.

Transfer

Most guests arrive via a 40-minute seaplane from Malé International Airport. The resort arranges the transfer, and the views—hundreds of tiny islands scattered across turquoise water—are worth the price of the ticket. Upon landing at the resort’s jetty, you’re greeted with a cool towel and a glass of passionfruit juice. If you’re staying at the sister property, Kudadoo, you’ll take a five-minute speedboat ride from Hurawalhi’s jetty. Worth recommending: booking the first seaplane of the day; the light is soft, and you’ll arrive at the resort in time for lunch.

Who it suits

Hurawalhi is my pick for couples who want a mix of romance and adventure. Honeymooners love the adults-only policy and the underwater restaurant, while experienced Maldives travellers appreciate the house reef and the all-inclusive package. The resort is also a good choice for small groups of friends—there are no kids, so the vibe is relaxed and sophisticated. The honest bit

The island is long and narrow, so some beach villas face the lagoon rather than the open ocean. The lagoon side is calmer, but the sunset views are better from the ocean side. The resort is also popular for weddings, so if you’re planning a honeymoon, ask for a villa away from the main ceremony area. Finally, the underwater restaurant is striking, but it’s not included in the all-inclusive package—you’ll need to budget around $200 per person for the experience. That said, it’s worth every cent; I’ve had clients tell me it was the highlight of their trip.
