Niyama is the only island resort in the Maldives with a consistent year-round surf break. The honest bit

Good to know: Niyama is a large, high-energy resort spread across two islands, so it is not the right fit for guests looking for a tiny, hushed, highly contained Maldives experience. Its strength is choice: restaurants, activities, watersports, family facilities, nightlife, surf and space to move around. Guests who want variety will usually enjoy that. Guests who want everything to feel small, quiet and very intimate may prefer a different island.

The biggest watchout is the house reef. Niyama has beautiful water and strong marine access in the wider area, but it is not a classic house-reef resort where guests can step off the beach or villa and immediately be on a standout reef. As of 2026, Niyama offers complimentary snorkelling excursions, which improves the experience and gives guests easier access to better snorkelling. It is a good inclusion, but it is still not the same as having a strong reef directly around the island.

The resort is also more polished-lifestyle than barefoot-natural. The product has a strong personality, with destination dining, a beach-club feel in places and a more active programme than many quieter Maldives resorts. That is a positive for families, groups and couples who want energy, but less ideal for guests whose idea of the Maldives is total stillness and minimal movement.

Room category and island location matter. Some guests will prefer being closer to the main facilities and restaurants, while others will value the quieter corners. I personally prefer anything on "Chill" as the beaches and lagoon are prettier. Because the resort has two islands and a wider footprint, it is worth choosing the room type carefully rather than treating all categories as interchangeable.

Niyama is strongest for families, groups, active couples and travellers who want a Maldives resort with real variety, strong dining, surf access and plenty to do. It is less suited to guests whose priorities are exceptional house-reef snorkelling, a tiny island feel or a very quiet, stripped-back castaway atmosphere.

Who it suits

Families with kids aged 1 to 12 love Niyama because the Explorer’s Kids Club is one of the best in the Maldives. Children eat for free at all restaurants when ordering from the kids’ menu, and villas come with popcorn machines and complimentary ice cream. Surfers appreciate the on-site wave and the resort’s surf guides, who can take you to uncrowded breaks in Thaa and Laamu atolls. Food lovers book here for Subsix and the resort’s nine other restaurants—no other Maldives resort offers this much variety. And couples who want a mix of romance and activity can split their time between Chill Island’s beach villas and Play Island’s jungle trails. If you’re travelling with a group that has different interests, Niyama is one of the few resorts that can keep everyone happy.

Transfer—seaplane and beyond

Niyama is a 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé. The resort has its own private lounge at the seaplane terminal, so you can check in quickly and wait in comfort. For late-night arrivals or early departures, the resort offers a domestic flight to Dhaalu Airport followed by a 20-minute speedboat transfer. Once you arrive, the resort is so large that you’ll want to use the complimentary bikes or electric buggies to get around—Play Island alone is 2.4 kilometres long, with jungle trails, tennis courts, and a volleyball net.

The kids club—Explorer’s

Explorer’s is the largest kids club in the Maldives, with programmes for four age groups: Globetrotters (12–24 months), Adventurers (3–4 years), Voyagers (5–7 years), and Pioneers (8–12 years). Activities include Dhivehi lullabies, dolphin scouting, island safaris, and junior master chef classes. The club is set deep in the forest of Play Island, so children feel like they’re on an adventure while parents relax at the spa or surf. Babysitting is available for $29 per hour, and children under 12 eat for free at all restaurants when ordering from the kids’ menu.

Spa and wellness—Drift Spa

Drift Spa is built over the lagoon, with treatment rooms that have glass floors so you can watch fish swim beneath you.
