Sun Siyam Vilu Reef
Sun Siyam Vilu Reef sits in Dhaalu Atoll, reached by seaplane from Malé. It is a smaller, more traditional Maldives resort than Iru Fushi, with a villa lineup across beach and over-water categories and a more compact island feel.
Why people come here
The main appeal is the classic Maldives setting at a more accessible price point. Vilu Reef works well for guests who want turquoise water, beach time, over-water villa options and a relaxed island atmosphere without moving into the higher luxury tiers.
The resort has a softer, simpler personality than the larger, more facilities-heavy islands. It is not trying to be a design-led five-star-plus property, but it gives guests a good-looking, easy Maldives experience with enough comfort and dining structure for a straightforward stay.
Sun Siyam Vilu Reef is best for couples, honeymooners and value-conscious travellers who want a smaller island, a classic resort feel and a more affordable way into Dhaalu Atoll.
Good to know
Vilu Reef is not a high-design or ultra-luxury resort. The product is comfortable and attractive for the price, but guests expecting very elevated interiors, highly personalised service or the newest villa hardware should look higher up the market.
The island is smaller and simpler than some of the larger Sun Siyam resorts. That helps the atmosphere feel more manageable, but it also means less variety in facilities and dining than at a bigger resort. With that being said, the resort just did undergo a recent expansion which has uncreased the number of villas and made the resort feel less “secluded”, as the water villas were built on the sand bank.
The seaplane transfer gives the stay a stronger sense of distance than North Malé, but it also makes the journey less convenient for short stays or late arrivals. Guests wanting the easiest possible logistics may prefer a speedboat-accessible resort.
