Most Maldives resorts are designed for either couples or families. Vakkaru does both without compromise. The island is large enough to feel uncrowded, yet most villas is positioned so you can choose when to be together and when to retreat. Overwater and beach villas share the same lagoon, so you can split your stay between hammocks over the water and private pools on the sand.

The resort’s layout is intentional. Family areas are clustered on one side, leaving the rest of the island quiet. Works for couples who want to feel alone but still have the option of a sunset stroll without tripping over strollers. That balance is rare.

Villas built for two (and only two)

Vakkaru offers seven villa categories, but the ones Worth recommending: for honeymooners are the one-bedroom options. Each has a private pool, outdoor shower, and direct beach or lagoon access. The standout is the Over Water Pool Residence—50 sqm infinity pool with a glass wall, overwater hammocks, and uninterrupted ocean views. The villa’s living room gives you space to spread out without losing the intimacy of a single bedroom.

For couples who prefer land, the Deluxe Beach Pool Residence is my pick. It’s 283 sqm with a 35 sqm pool, a pantry kitchen for in-villa dining, and a rear garden that feels like your own private beach. The resort’s butler service means you can order breakfast to the terrace or arrange a surprise picnic without leaving the villa.

Dining that feels like a date every night

Vakkaru’s four restaurants and two bars are designed so every meal can be a romantic moment. Amaany serves breakfast on the beach, while Lagoon Bar offers tapas-style small plates at sunset. Isoletta, the Italian restaurant, is a favourite for crispy wood-fired pizzas and handmade pasta. For a splurge, Vakku’s beachfront grill serves premium cuts and fresh seafood under the stars.

The resort’s organic farm adds another layer. Couples can join a ‘Farm to Table’ tour with the chef, then enjoy a cooking class together. It’s a way to slow down and connect over something beyond the usual beachside candlelight dinner.

Romantic experiences worth booking

• Sunset dhoni cruises with champagne and canapés—just the two of you, the captain, and the horizon.
• Private movie nights on the beach. The resort sets up a projector, blankets, and popcorn while you pick the film.
• Snorkelling the house reef’s ‘blue hole’—a unique underwater formation where turtles and reef sharks often pass through.

When to go for the best honeymoon conditions

Baa Atoll’s dry season runs from December to April, with calm seas and sunny skies. This is peak honeymoon season—expect the most reliable weather and the highest demand. If you prefer fewer crowds, consider May or November. The resort often offers value rates during these shoulder months, and the occasional brief shower makes the sunny hours feel even more special.

For manta ray encounters, plan your trip between June and October. Hanifaru Bay, a short boat ride from Vakkaru, becomes a feeding ground for dozens of mantas during this period. It’s one of the most striking natural events in the Maldives.

Transfers and logistics

Vakkaru is a 35-minute seaplane flight from Malé International Airport. The resort has a private lounge at the airport, so you can relax before your transfer. If you’re combining your honeymoon with another destination, the seaplane schedule is flexible enough to connect with international flights from Dubai, Doha, or Singapore.

Once you arrive, the resort provides complimentary bicycles to explore the island. It’s a nice way to work off the indulgent meals while soaking in the scenery.

What Vakkaru doesn’t have (and why it’s a good thing)

Vakkaru isn’t trying to be the most extravagant resort in the Maldives. There are no underwater restaurants, no villas with slides, and no celebrity chef outposts. What it offers instead is a refined, understated luxury that puts the focus on the two of you. The absence of gimmicks means the romance feels authentic, not staged.

The resort also doesn’t have a kids’ club that dominates the island. While families are welcome, the layout ensures you won’t feel like you’re on a family holiday. The Parrotfish Club is tucked away, and the Coconut Club for teens is open 24/7, so parents can enjoy uninterrupted time together.
