If you've spent any time in the Maldives you know the resort and the villa are not the same conversation. A great resort can have merely-fine villas; a tired resort can have a flagship villa that saves the trip. Below are the three overwater villa products I would actually choose to wake up in — based on layout, water interaction, finish, and that hard-to-define sense of generosity.
The three
The Water Villas at Cheval Blanc are simply the most generous overwater spaces I've been in. The proportions are wrong in the best way — the rooms feel like an apartment, not a villa, with a separate living room, an outdoor terrace that's bigger than most pool villas' interiors, and a private pool that makes you forget the lagoon below. The bath positioned to look out across Noonu is the visual that does it.
The retractable roof over the bed is the famous bit, but the slide from the upper deck into the lagoon is the part that actually changes how you spend your day. Wake up, espresso, slide. Repeat. The villa is enormous and the wood-and-thatch barefoot finish feels honest in a way the fully air-conditioned glass-box villas at other resorts don't quite manage.
South Malé, properly grown-up overwater. The villas sit directly above the reef rather than over a sandy lagoon, so the snorkel off the deck is good. Interior finish is restrained-luxe rather than show-off, and the pool placement on the deck is well thought-out — sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon, no overlap with the next villa.
