Why Niyama works for honeymooners

Most Maldives resorts are single islands built for one vibe. Niyama gives you two: Play for days when you feel like exploring, Chill for days when you don’t. The bridge between them is short enough to walk barefoot, so you can start the morning with a jungle bike ride and end it with a candlelit dinner on the sand without ever leaving the resort.

The villa count—134—sounds large, but the islands are spread out. You’ll have more privacy than at many smaller resorts. Most villas comes with a private thakuru (butler) who can arrange everything from in-villa massages to sunset dolphin cruises. • Subsix: the world’s first underwater restaurant, reached by speedboat and a dramatic staircase lit by coral-shaped chandeliers. Dine six metres below the surface while fish swim past your table. The menu changes, but recent dishes included Wagyu sirloin and truffle-topped eggs.
• The Edge: a fine-dining restaurant perched on a dock half a kilometre out in the ocean, accessible only by boat. Perfect for seafood lovers—think scallops and lobster with ocean views.
• Nest: a treetop restaurant with Asian-inspired dishes like pad Thai and maki rolls. The open-air setting makes it feel like a private treehouse.
• Private sandbank picnics: arranged by your butler, complete with champagne and a Maldivian BBQ.
• Stargazing on the beach: the resort’s remote location means minimal light pollution. Your butler can set up a telescope or just lay out blankets and pillows.

Dining for two

Niyama has ten restaurants and five bars, so you can eat somewhere different every night. Breakfast and dinner rotate between Epicure and BLU, two buffet-style restaurants with changing themes—Spice Route, Maldivian Mas Bazaar, and more. For à la carte meals, Half Board guests get a $70 credit per person per night to use at any of the other venues.

The resort’s Dine-In service brings meals to your villa: sunrise spa cuisine, lavish breakfasts, or indulgent dinners like caviar blinis and Wagyu sirloin. Children’s favourites are available too, though most honeymooners skip those.

For a casual bite, The Deli offers paninis, gelato, and coffee. The Surf Shack, a reggae-themed bar on Play island, serves rum cocktails and has a laid-back vibe—great for sunset drinks after a surf session.

Villas built for couples

Niyama’s villas are designed for privacy and space. The Beach Pool Villas (135 sqm) open directly onto the sand, with outdoor bathrooms that let you shower under the stars. Inside, you’ll find a king bed facing the ocean, a popcorn machine, and a fridge stocked with complimentary homemade ice cream.

The Water Pool Villas are perched over the lagoon, with private infinity pools and baths that overlook the water. Both villa types come with a Dhoni-shaped swing on the deck—well-suited to sunset photos.

For something more exclusive, The Crescent is a collection of five luxury pool villas with private jetties. These are popular for honeymoons, so message Fede early if you’re interested.

Surf and seclusion

Niyama is the only island resort in the Maldives with a consistent year-round surf break right off the beach. The wave, Vodi, is a left-hand reef break that works for beginners and intermediates. Lessons are available, and the resort can arrange transfers to other breaks in Thaa and Laamu atolls if you want more variety.

If you’re not surfing, the resort’s Deep Blue Divers team offers PADI courses and daily snorkelling trips by boat to nearby reefs. The lagoon itself is sandy, so you won’t find a house reef here—but the boat trips are complimentary and well-organised.

Honeymoon perks (when available)

Niyama has offered honeymoon packages in the past that included in-villa amenities, spa credits, and dine-around cuisine.
